Today’s word prompt of the day for the Five Minute Friday Write 31 Days is listen…
Being a homeschool mom, even a mom in general, I want to make sure my kids learn how to listen. We have two ears and one mouth because we are meant to listen more than speak. However, when teaching this to my kids, I have learned that to teach them to listen, I must also take the time to listen. Just because I am mom does not mean that I don’t have to listen.
Teaching them to listen has helped me to listen. Listening can come in many ways. First of all, when I want the kids to listen to me, I make them make eye contact, so when they want me to listen to them, safety permitting, I make eye contact with them. I want them to acknowledge what they have heard me say, so I make sure to acknowledge them when they speak to me.
In a world where everyone is stuck in the digital aspect, I want to make sure my kids grow up actually listening to people. Showing the respect that comes with a true listener and making someone’s day because they were listened to!
How do you teach your kids to be good listeners? Did you realize you had to be a good listener to teach good listening skills? Check back tomorrow for another word!
