5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials ~ Quiet Time with God

HE lead me into homeschooling…and HE will continue to lead me on this journey with my family! To think that I could homeschool without my quiet time with HIM each day, would be a joke. Just as a gas tank in my truck needs to be filled, so does my faith tank within me. My coffee gives me a caffeine boost in the morning, but I have learned that I need something more than that.

Everyday I get up and I start my coffee. After the coffee has begun I take the time to read from my Jesus Calling Devotional written by Sarah Young. I love this book…it takes the Word and makes it real. I love it so much that Ray Ray got his own Jesus Calling Bible Story Book for Christmas (Little Miss loves to sit in on the readings too). I was lucky enough to win a Jesus Calling for Kids Devotional for Moe Man. It is the same topic as mine, but easier for kids to read. Our school day starts after I have my time with God and the kids have theirs. I notice when we skip this step of the day…it doesn't work right…trust me!

After a good start to the morning we are able to continue on with our day. We don't just  stop our time with God after Devotionals are done. I have put Bible verses up throughout the house. Taking a few minutes whenever you see the verse is a perfect way for us to refill throughout the day. I love watching Ray Ray as he looks at a verse and sounds out the different sounds to see if he can make out the words. What better way to learn how to read?!

We are a Catholic family. We are learning the Rosary together and we have just started learning about the Saints of the day. We are using My Journal of Saints from Heather over at Upside Down Homeschooling. The kids love doing this, and I love that I am able to easily teach them more about our faith.

I want my kids to have God's Word hidden in my heart. The best way to do that is to have them memorize the bible. Ray Ray is working on shorter verses that go with the letter we are working on for the week. Of course Little Miss has to do what he is, so she is learning them slowly as well. I have started a new program with Moe Man this week. We are working together to memorize The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). We are using an awesome program from Kimberly at Brookdale House (watch for a review coming). It is so nice to quiz each other throughout the day and help bring us back into focus that way.

I love the homeschooling journey that HE has lead us on. I couldn't imagine it any other way. I also can not imagine a day without some refueling from HIM also. This is my number one essential when it comes to homeschooling. I could say it was the curriculum or any of the "things" but without HIM and HIS Word, I would have nothing. And having the kids home full time has actually brought me closer to HIM in the last year.
