90 Minutes in Heaven ~ Book Review

Have you ever read a book that leaves you wanting more? A book that hits you right at the core? I found that book when I read 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper. This edition was the movie edition of the book…because on the 11th this movie will be in theaters!

90 Minutes in Heaven

This is a paperback book with 245 pages. A little bit about the book: Pastor Don Piper died January 18, 1989 when a semi-tractor truck crushed his car.  Declared dead by the first rescue workers to arrive on the scene, Don's body lay under a tarp for the next 90 minutes.  Don's soul, meanwhile, was experiencing love, joy, and life like he'd never known before.  Don was in Heaven.

When another pastor's prayers helped bring Don back to life, he became a living miracle!  Yet this is one miracle Don wished never happened.  Heaven's bliss was replaced by excruciating pain and emotional turmoil.  With the support and prayers of his beloved Eva, their three kids, and friends near and far, Don clings to his faith in God and fights to regain a semblance of his previous life.  The Piper family's incredible true story of perseverance and overcoming the challenges of life – and death – will bring hope and encouragement to all who see it.

This book was hard to read at times. There were times when I just couldn’t put it down. As much as I wanted to know what Don has to say about heaven, I was scared. I have recently lost family, and am actually dealing with the anniversary of a death. To know what they could be experiencing brings me joy, yet it is hard for those of us still here.

While hearing about the experience in Heaven brought me goosebumps and tears, the real story is when Don has to recover from his accident, in more ways than one.

Following along with Don’s struggle made me cheer him on from home. I wanted to hug him when he was opening his heart to us as the reader. I felt that if I could have given him a hug, shout out, or just a mention of how things would get better, he might hear me. I was a part of this story.

90 Minutes in Heaven was a book that was able to help me slow down and realize how short live can be. How fast that it can be taken from us. Yet, I also learned that God has plans for us. He knows what he wants us to do and how he wants us to work for him. Even if it means dying and coming back to share His glory with those of us who have not seen it yet.

90 Minutes in Heaven was first published in 2004 without any knowledge of what a success it would become. On Friday, September 11, 2015, this book will be in theaters! Rated PG-13 (for intense accident and injury images), starring names such as Hayden Christensen (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Kate Bosworth (Remember The Titans, Blue Crush) Michael W. Smith, Fred Thompson, Dwight Yoakam, and Jason Kennedy.
