Veritas Press ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

veritas press

Have you heard of Veritas Press? They have lots of fun curriculum and especially one called Veritas Press Self-Paced Omnibus I. Moe Man had the opportunity to review this program.

Veritas Press Self-Paced Omnibus I is an “all encompassing” course that includes history, theology and literature for ages 12 and up (grade seventh through ninth). All the material in this course are taught using a biblical, Christian worldview.  Students are brought to the place where the history happened through the use of the online videos. Not only do they learn through the visiting of the places, but they are quizzed on what they learn as well.

Everything for the course is included with the online program. There is no need for planning on my part. I send him to the site and let him go. There isn’t even a lot of reading…more listening and watching videos than anything, which Moe Man really enjoyed. There are some readings that are the “homework”, and most come from the bible. Those assignments that are not from the bible are able to be accessed through the eBook or via the course itself. Once you purchase this course, you won’t need to purchase anything else. There are no special requirements, other than high speed internet that is needed for the course.

The cost of a year’s access to the course is $295. To enroll a second child in the same course, you get $100 off the cost.

Once you are enrolled, you the parent get a teacher page, while your child gets their own student log in page. They are able to see the different assignments before they start each day.

I let Moe Man go with this program. He enjoyed having the freedom of not having me hover over him while he worked on his school. But I was able to make sure he was understanding it all by checking in via my page.

At least three days each week, sometimes four, Moe Man would sit down and watch the videos for each lesson. After watching the videos for the lesson, we would work the worksheets or quizzes together. As much fun as Moe Man had doing this on his own, I noticed the worksheets and quizzes were hard on him. If I was able to work through them with him, he did much better than doing them on his own. I feel this is because of his learning style and not because of the program itself.

Through the use of Omnibus I, we have been able to work through Genesis, Exodus, Gilgamesh, and are now working on Hammurabi. This course took the place of our history for the time being. We found that it was perfect to help us learn more about ancient history as well as the history of the bible.

Moe Man really enjoyed using this program and I feel that he will continue using this without me asking him to! This is big for him when it comes to school. Not only does he love history, but to have it presented in such a fun and easy to understand way makes it that much more fun for him. The actual videos were very well presented and made it easy for anyone to follow along. Like I said, the worksheets and quizzes were hard for Moe Man, but that is him and not the program. Overall, this program was a wonderful program!

What On Earth Can I Do ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

In the world today, your kids need a good solid bible curriculum. Something that will show them who they are and where they stand in the world. If you are still looking for a good Christian Worldview family devotional, I have just what you are looking for! Apologia Educational Ministries offers their What We Believe Series for just that! We had the opportunity to use the What On Earth Can I Do? hardback book ($39), What On Earth Can I Do? Notebooking Journal ($24), What On Earth Can I Do? Junior Notebooking Journal ($24) and What On Earth Can I Do? Coloring Book ($8).

Each of these four items are sold individually, and sure you could just get the hardback book, but you wouldn’t be able to expand like the notebooking journals and coloring book help you to do.  You cannot just get the notebooking journals and think you can “make it work”. I would highly recommend the hardback book and the notebooking journal for the age you need as a bare minimum! Each of the notebooking journals are spiral bound books which make it wonderful to work in. The coloring book is in typical “coloring book” style with a soft cover. The actual What On Earth Can I Do? book is an actual hardback beautiful book!

What on Earth

Apologia recommends this book for ages 6-14. We used this as a family. Each of the boys had a journal to work in and Little Miss had the coloring book to herself. Upon receiving this set, I sat down and started reading the “How to Use This Book” section. What better place to start! There are 8 lessons in this book, but there is so much information in each lesson, that you can make them “last” awhile. In fact, if you went off the daily suggested lesson plans in the notebooking journals and did three days a week, you would have 16 weeks worth of lessons. However, the beauty of this program, it is designed to allow the children to go at their own pace! We have taken the lessons and stretched them a bit more since we had two younger ones following along with us.

Both of the boys loved having their very own notebooking journals. I loved seeing the Junior Journal for Ray Ray since he usually doesn’t get those “fun” things. The journals help the children take what they have learned and make it their own. We have been having fun adding those in where ever we can. This was no exception.

Each lesson is broken down into about 12 different components. These are usually things like the Big Idea or main topic of the lesson. What Will You Do comes next and this is the learning objectives of the lessons. Each lesson also has a Short Story. These stories contain a glimpse into the lives of children who are within this age range. Words You Need to Know includes the important vocabulary of the lesson. Hide It in Your Heart includes the bible memory verse that takes the idea of the lesson and give the kids a way to remember it. The What Should I Do? section gives the kids a specific godly character trait they should work on and apply to their lives. I really love the Parables of Jesus section when we could read a story with a beautiful lesson that has been adapted from a teaching from Jesus.

The Notebooking Journals also include many different components to each lesson. They range from Blank Note-Taking Pages, Think About It, Words to Know, Word Puzzles and Find Out More. Each of these sections range from the Notebooking Journal to the Junior Notebooking Journal based on the age range. The Junior Notebooking Journal is recommended for ages 6-9, while the Notebooking Journal is best for ages 10-14.

We loved sitting down and reading each section together. We would read as a family and then move over to the table to work on our journals. Because of the length of the readings, we would sometimes split the lessons up and work on our notebook the next day or later in the day. It was nice that the notebooks were set up really similar to each other and each boy could work on their own pages. I loved seeing them remember what we had just read and put it on paper. Each lesson idea is written out in the notebook, including the readings and notebooking pages to go along with them. There was nothing too hard on my part to plan or prepare. It was all right there ready to go. This made it very easy for me to grab it whenever we had the chance and use it when the time was right for us.

We loved this program. We loved every aspect of it. There was something for everyone, and the lessons seemed to just talk to us. It was easy to see what we were supposed to be learning and apply it to our lives. There were some “dark” stories (for example, about the Nazis and the Holocaust) but the best part of this was that even in the dark, hard times, God was there and working his magic. This was the main point of all the stories. This made those teaching moments of “even when things are bad, look for God” more possible. The only complaint that the children had about this, was the length of some of the readings. I would take notice when they got restless and stop though. For this being the only complaint, it really isn’t that bad! We loved this and do recommend this for anyone who is looking for a Christian Worldview program.

Grapevine Studies ~ Review and GIVEAWAY

How do you study the bible? How do your kids study the bible? What if I told you there was a fun way to make your kids want to study the bible all day and they truly enjoyed it and remembered it!?! Welcome to the picture Grapevine Studies

This wonderful program was created by John and Dianna, who have homeschooled all four of their children. They made a program that has taken my rambunctious 5 year old and sit and focus on what I was telling him! This program not only interests Ray Ray, but Moe Man loves to pull out the colored pencils and "stick figure through the bible" with us!

There is more than one level when it comes to the Grapevine Studies. The newest being the traceables for the littles (3-5 years) who aren't sure they can actually draw yet! These levels go all the way up to Level 4 for the young teens. Each level gets a little more in depth with the stories in the bible.

We used the Level 3 New Testament Overview (Part 1) and the Traceable Beginner Part 1, John to the Apostles. These are two separate programs, but they cover almost the same topics, and were perfect for our ages. The teacher editions show what color the different people and items should be and help you to explain and ask questions about the readings.

The Level 3 book starts with blank squares with the bible verse in them. After reading the verse, you go on to stick figuring what you just heard. Now, there are a few ways to do this. I grabbed a piece of scratch paper and drew right along with Moe Man. I would look at the teacher edition and draw, than he would copy my drawing. Another way, which Ray Ray prefers is to allow the kids to look at the teacher copy while you read and they draw.

The Traceable Beginner book has a simple picture of what to draw. The kids than take the correct color and trace the image. As soon as Ray Ray started, he wouldn't stop! He couldn't stop! I have scratch paper all through the house that is filled with stick figures telling me stories of the bible…not just what we have read with Grapevine, but all the bible stories he remembers!

So, do I like this program? You bet I do! I wouldn't trade this for anything else! This has made the kids remember what they hear and they can actually picture it as they draw the pictures. With the eBooks going for $10 and the Teacher eBooks at $18, the price is very nice and nothing to complain about. You can find Grapevine Studies on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.

Dianna has been nice enough to offer up a student and teacher eBook combo of The Resurrection to one of you lovely readers! Make sure you enter and pass the word along!!

Bible Memorization Made Easy ~ Review

Memorize the Sermon on the Mount

“And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”

This is just the beginning of a fun program Moe Man and I have been working on. Have you ever wanted to memorize parts of the bible but felt that it would be too hard, you are too old, or how could your kids ever remember all that? Let me tell you, if Moe Man and I can do it, so can you! For those of you who don’t know, Moe Man was adopted. He was also diagnosed with ADHD and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Most people don’t expect miracles from him. I didn’t even think large amounts of memorization would be a thing he could do. I was pleasantly surprised with him proving me wrong! After the first week of using Kimberly’s Memorize the Sermon on the Mount program, Moe Man was and still does remember all the words to Matthew 5:1-8!

There are two different formats when ordering your own Bible Memorization Made Easy. The eBook Instant Download is $15.99 and the Printed Book is available for $21.99. All you need is this one book (or PDF) and your own bible if you want…but it is not needed to complete the program. This program is geared for teenagers, but I can tell you that I noticed Ray Ray copying both Moe Man and myself…and yes, I am doing this too!

There couldn’t be a simpler way to work on memorizing the bible. There is no guess work in this program. There is a 5-day plan and if you follow that, you should have no problems.

Day 1:  Read your bible verse that you are working on that week, then write that part of the verse out.

Day 2:  Read and write your passage for the week, now fill in the blanks from memory (25% missing)

Day 3:  Read and write the passage, now 50% of the passage is missing and you fill it in from memory.

Day 4:  Read and write the passage, 75% of the passage is missing and you fill it in from memory.

Day 5:  Read the passage, by this point you will be able to write the passage from memory!!

(We have taken some extra days each week to help Moe Man keep up with the previous weeks and still be able to add on more). I have found that he loves to type on the computer and having him type out the passage from the beginning not only helps refresh his memory, but works on his typing skills also!!

My opinion of this product: Umm…did you watch that video? I LOVE that Moe Man is able to once again prove every statistic wrong and do something he, himself, never thought he could do. He is more than happy as we finish each week. Doing this program together has given us something more to spend time with, and he loves being my “teacher”. This is a program we will be finishing and we will be picking out another to work on when we are done with this.

What do you think? Take my word for it…I have fallen in love with homeschool products before…but this is something I LOVE, it deserves all caps!! 🙂 There is a sale happening right now…you can use the code 20PERCENT and you get 20% off your order of this wonderful program…don’t wait, go and get started on adding the word of the LORD to your child’s heart!

Don't take my word for it…check out these other reviews of the different books also!
