Apologia Creation Astronomy ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Who created the moon and the stars? Who made the universe? Who made the sun? Questions that I have heard from the kids, especially Ray Ray. I love these questions, and I love when I can find a great curriculum to help me explain all of this! We had the chance to review Exploring Creation with Astronomy, 2nd Edition from Apologia Educational Ministries and I can't wait to tell you all about this curriculum!

apologia-review

What Is It

Exploring Creation with Astronomy is a full science curriculum for grades Kindergarten up to 4th depending on the Notebook Journal you pick. For this review, we received the Student Text, Notebooking Journal, Jr. Notebooking Journal and Audio CD. The Notebooking Journal is geared towards 3 or 4th grade or higher. The Jr. Notebooking Journal is great for Kindergarten up to 2nd or 3rd grade.

Apologia

The beginning of each Notebooking Journal has a suggested lesson plan to follow. If you follow this and do 2 daily lessons a week, it will take you a full year to complete this curriculum. Each lesson includes a reading, an activity and/or a notebooking entry. If you have a student who doesn't like reading (like Ray Ray), the audio CD has every lesson read by the author, Jeannie Fulbright. These readings include what is in the book so your child can follow along. Ray Ray learns better by listening while reading silently in his head. This CD has been my lifesaver for this curriculum!

Each of the two Notebooking Journals are similar, but contain age appropriate activities. Both have a copy work page, in the Jr. notebook the lines are more appropriate for an early writer versus the simple single line in the regular journal. One difference that I have found, at the end of each lesson, the Jr. notebook has some coloring pages while the regular notebook has What Do You Remember pages that has some basic questions that will check your child's understanding of the lesson. These notebooking journals are spiral bound and are a great keepsake for the years to come as to what your child learned.

Apologia

The actual textbook for Exploring Creation With Astronomy is a hardcover book filled with beautiful pictures to help your child understand what is being taught. This book is not a book filled text that is boring for your child. This book is engaging and beautiful. The lessons include bible quotes and Think About This sections that have your child slow down and make the lesson real for them.

How We Used It

We decided to follow the suggested guideline to this curriculum and kept it to two lessons a week. This allowed us some time to digest what we were learning and build from it. Using this schedule, we had fun with the first two lessons in this book. The daily lessons were fun, simple and a combination of reading and notebooking. We enjoyed doing the experiments and calling in the other siblings to make some of them work. I had Ray Ray explain to the siblings what he was going to have them do and what they were representing. This made him recall what we were learning. Win-win for this mom!

We started off with Ray Ray reading each of the lessons, but quickly found out that he didn't like the reading part. He would complain about reading, and not want to do the lessons. As soon as I pulled out the audio CD he was once again draw in. He would follow along with the lesson as he listened to it being read to him by Jeannie Fulbright, the author.

Aoplogia

While following the two days a week plan, we have found that we can space these out for Ray Ray. When doing this, we could make each daily lesson last two days and have something each day to learn about or do. We would do the reading one day, followed up by the Activities or notebooking the next. This kept our lessons short and at the level that Ray Ray loves them. Even when a lesson was done in full, they were short, only lasting up to 30 minutes depending on how long Ray Ray would take doing his notebooking.

What We Thought of It

This was a program that was more than I had anticipated! I knew from hearing others that Apologia has great science programs. We have used other programs from Apologia and loved them. But this, this was all of that and so much more! The pictures in both the textbook and the notebooking journals are beautiful! They show the beauty that is astronomy! The textbook itself is so full of information, yet can easily be understood by the younger readers. The activities that are chosen are fun, hands on and full of learning!

The two levels of notebooking journals take the learning to the level of the user. The lower level has all that the younger learners need without overwhelming them, where you can take this same text and use it with the older learners and learn something new! The daily readings for both levels are the same, so this is a great option for family learning and not having to worry about more than one textbook!

Apologia

We loved the audio CD that came with this. Jeannie reads this text with so much enthusiasm that you can tell she enjoyed writing this as much as we have enjoyed learning from it. This is no boring audio with a monotone speaker. This audio has music and life to it. In fact, Ray Ray loved this audio CD so much he wanted nothing to do with the textbook and just wanted to listen to the story at hand. That is what makes this CD work for him, he thought it was a story, not school!

This is a science curriculum that I would recommend to anyone looking for creation based science. The notebooking journals are a must and if you have a student like Ray Ray, you need to grab the CD as well. You will not be disappointed with this at all. I haven't been and I had some high expectations before getting this!

Our 2016-2017 Kindergarten Curriculum

The first day of kindergarten is an emotional one, for both the child and the parent. There are tears and fears that each face. The minor fact of whether the child is homeschooled or going to public school does not matter when it comes to the fact that Kindergarten is a huge milestone for school.

Our 2016-2017

Little Miss is starting Kindergarten. She is ready, mom and dad are not. We want her to stay 4 forever, but we know that is not possible. We knew that we needed to get her ready for school, and that means planning a Kindergarten year. Little Miss is the opposite of Ray Ray, so I had to find something that she would like better. This didn't take too long after finding Little House Kindergarten!

I had wanted to do Five in a Row with her, but I knew that wasn't enough. I still plan on reading the books and doing some activities from the book list, but Little Miss needed something more. She needed something with worksheets, with writing and something with more structure. That is why I kept looking, but not for long.

littlehouseinfographic

Little House Kindergarten is a full curriculum and is a pay what you can curriculum. This is great for homeschooling families that are on a tight or almost nonexistent budget. This curriculum is made for every child using a variety of learning styles, from video games, hands on activities and worksheets.

This is also a great program for parents. Everything is there and ready, along with so much more. I almost wish I would have found this for Ray Ray, but am thankful for finding it now.

Although this program has everything we need, and exceeds the state standards of most states, we have opted to use a few extras. We have been using Jolly Phonics, and love this for our phonics. While we use this, it is just an add on. We still use the reading and language lessons that are included, but we are loving these fun Jolly Phonics as well (watch for the upcoming review).

student books_zpsdnh5ko2x

This is about all we plan on doing for Kindergarten, well of course besides the reading that we always do! This does not take us that long to do each day. This is perfect because for me, Kindergarten is all about fun and games, not tedious tasks. I fact, we didn't do any real school with Ray Ray until 1st grade, so this is all new and fun for me.

What do you do for Kindergarten? Do you have a curriculum, or do you have fun and play the whole time? Remember that playing is learning for the younger kids anyway!

Our 2016-2017 Second Grade Curriculum Choices

Is it really time to start a new school year? I am not ready for this, but I know that it needs to happen. This year Ray Ray is going into the second grade. While this is not always a huge deal, to me it is. Ray Ray is my first fully homeschooled child. Everything he knows, I taught him at home. This gets me every time…

2nd Grade Curriculum Choices 2016-2017

We have spent some time thinking about what we were going to use for each subject. We finally came up with this list. While this is what we are starting out with, I cannot guarantee that it will stay this way…we homeschool and things change as they need to. There are some that I love and won't change, and there are others that I am using for now to see how they work. Either way, this is what we will be using when we start our new year on August 1, 2016.

Math

We love Mammoth Math for Ray Ray. While it did not work for Moe Man, this curriculum is perfect for Ray Ray. We have used their First Grade program and have plans to continue using this program. I don't foresee a change for him at all when it comes to math. Mammoth Math has a strong focus on mental math, which Ray Ray is good at and I love that he is able to read and/or watch the YouTube videos to help him learn each one of the lessons. They even give us a list of fun activities or games at the beginning of each chapter that we use as a warm up each day. Ray Ray loves it, and so do I, so we will keep using this again this year.

Mammoth Math

Language Arts

While we love using our Daily Writing workbook each day, we also love the Language Arts lessons over at Easy Peasy All In One Homeschool. These lessons work on our reading, writing and spelling skills. The lessons are effective and easy at the same time. This is just what I need for Ray Ray in this area of learning. Plus, it is all free, so I won't be complaining about this at all!

Easy Peasy

Science

This year we had the chance to work on a review of Apologia's Exploring Creation With Astronomy. This program is better than I expected! I can't wait to share the review with you soon!

History

Once again, we are going to Easy Peasy with this one. I love their rotation and this year we will be learning all about Ancient History. This year we get to learn about ancient Egypt, the Mayans, the Vikings the renaissance and even some early explorers! Everything is a mix of reading and hands on fun! We are so excited to be doing this with Easy Peasy!

Art

Art is going to be a mix of things this year. I plan to use the ideas given on the Easy Peasy page. I like the ideas under Ancient that goes along with what we are learning in our history lessons. I also plan to pull some other projects out of the Early Elementary Artistic Pursuits, remember our review of this?

Extras

We will be adding and taking away during the year. We will have our music and PE classes. We will also have a few other extras throughout the year.

What are some of the curriculum choices you will be looking at using this year for 2nd grade? Are you using some of the same, or do you have something different you are using? Let me know, I would love to hear from you!

NotebookingPages.com ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Are you frustrated with your current curriculum? Are you looking for something fun that will help your kids learn at the same time? Instead of being frustrated and tied down, why not use some fun journaling, and why not make it pretty, or handsome, with the notebboking pages that are designed for them. The Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership at NotebookingPages.com has everything you need for just this!

Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership

What Is It

NotebookingPages.com is a website that has a notebooking page for almost everything, with new ones being added. The different topics are A-Z, Bible/Character, Famous People, Fine Arts, Geography, History, Holidays, Language Arts and Science/Nature. Oh, and there is even a section call Any Study. This is where you can pick and choose what you need for your homeschool if it isn't already listed in any of the other sections!

Debra, the owner of NotebookingPages.com, is a homeschool mom herself who wanted something better for her kids. When she wasn't able to find, she made it. And I am thankful that she did! This is our go to page for all things notebooking!

How We Used It

There is no right or wrong way to use this site, just so you know right now. You will decide how you want to use it, and that is what you will do. We have used this site for YEARS, and each time I find something new to use in a new and different way. Each one of my kids use the resources here in different ways and each one loves what they do.

Little Miss

Little Miss is busy learning her letters. I am able to hop on in and find the letter we are learning about in the A-Z section and we can use the pages to go with that letter. We love coloring the big letters and making the fun little books. We are able to draw a picture(s) of things that start with letter and practice writing words that start with that letter. She loves just having her own books to read to Baby Girl.

Ray Ray

Ray Ray is busy learning about birds and clouds this summer. We are finding out that the Charlotte Mason style homeschooing is best for him, and these notebooking pages help us to learn in a different way. I simply printed up some pages on the different birds in our area and let him find the information he wanted to learn about them. He is busy making his own bird book, and loves watching the birds with his book. We have also had fun simply staring at the clouds. The nature study section has a great collection of pages on clouds and we are able to write about what we see and find the difference in the clouds to the weather and how they both seem to change at the same time.

Moe Man

Moe Man is even busy with these pages. He has found a style he liked in the Any Study section and used this as a way to take notes for his government course. He takes one page per lesson and fills it full of what he is learning. There are some really neat little squares on some pages, and he is able to use those to draw what he has read about. This is a fun way of notetaking that you would not get from simple lined paper. I love seeing what he comes up with each day!

What We Thought

I love these pages. I love having that one site that has what I need to make a boring subject fun. That one site where I can replace the worksheets with fun sheets. I love that there are two different styles of lines with each unit and that I can pick and choose which one will work for us each day. The Lifetime Membership has been worth it to our family and we will continue to use these pages long into the future of our homeschooling days. If you have to pick one thing for your homeschool, pick this. This is essential in our homeschool and I think you will feel the same way about it in yours.

VeritasBible.com ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Bible Study, it is that time in the house when everyone goes and spends time alone with God. Everyone has their own way to do this, but the younger kids have an issue with the actual reading and understanding. How do you make the Bible easy for the little ones to understand? Make it a game! VeritasBible.com from Veritas Press is just that, a fun game for the kids to learn the Bible.

What Is It

VeritasBible.com is an online program that allows your child to work at their own pace in a game style Bible Study. There is no prep work for mom or dad, just let your child sit down and "play" the games. There are "lessons", and I say it like that because there is no real read this, it is set up in a video format. There are currently three sections to choose from, Genesis to Joshua, The Gospels, Judges to Kings.

Old and New Testament Online Self-Paced Bible Veritas Review

There are 128 lessons, 4 for each event and 32 flashcards. The program works on Windows, Mac, Android Tablets and iPad. It is web based, so no apps are needed. VertiasBible.com follows the New King James Version of the Bible.

Your child will pick which section they start with. They are given simple instructions to "play" that level. They have to earn stars to move forward, just like the popular games on the iPad or phone.

Veritas Press

After the fun lesson, the kids have review questions. These questions make sure they were paying attention to the lesson, yet the answers can be found if you open your Bible and look for them as well.

Each lesson takes about 20-40 minutes from beginning to end. This isn't that long at all and has been able to keep everyone's attention. In fact, I have seen Ray Ray do 2 or 3 at one time.

Veritas Press

How We Used It

I loved this program. I would tell each child when it was time for Bible, they would run for a computer. They would spend time watching the lesson, studying the lesson and answering the questions. While the boys had no issues, Little Miss had me help her with the questions.

All three big kids used this, but Ray Ray was the one who loved it the most. He would get lost in the game and have to be told to stop. Since he loved this as much as he did, I felt bad telling him to stop.

Veritas Press

After the kids would do their lesson, I would ask questions about the lesson. These would be simple, but just enough for me to know that they did the lesson. This was my way of keeping track other than logging in as each child and seeing the amount of stars (1-3) that they received for each lesson. Since I was not grading this, the questions I asked were enough for me to know that each lesson was done. I would also ask for the child to redo a lesson if I noticed 1 star versus 2 or 3.

What We Thought

Ray Ray, the game lover of the family, loves this program. At 7, technically 8 as he calls it, this program is a perfect fit for him. He is able to read what needs to be read, yet still loves the game like features of the program. This is a program the type of program where he is asking for more, not complaining about having to do it. This is something that we will continue to use and we look forward to the new units that are coming soon!

Ultimate K-12 Homeschool Package – “I've tried a LOT of homeschool curriculum products over the years, and quite frankly this is the best value available in a secular curriculum package and it's easy on the parent. I'm homeschooling two kids and it's very easy to have them read the lesson and complete the assignments independently, then later the teacher's guides make it easy on me to review their work and correct it. The content is interesting and relates to the real world in a way that makes sense to the kids, especially the math problems. You also can't beat the price. I'm shocked that this curriculum isn't better known. You will pay a lot more for comparable products that won't have the quality this one has, and I've done the research and spent the money to be able to say that with authority.” -Judith A.

Here to Help Learning ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Are you looking for a homeschool writing program that works with your kids and allows them to have fun while learning? A program that you work with your child, yet you don't have to do a lot of working when it comes to the planning? We used Here to Help Learning and their Flight 1 Paragraph Writing.

Here to Help Learning

Why would they call this Flight 1? Well, because you are hoping on an airplane and having a good time while learning! Ray Ray loves to use this computer for his learning as much as possible, and this writing program has allowed him to do that.

Here to Help Learning is an online writing program. There is filmed instruction for each one of the weekly lessons which goes over the topics your child will need to work on. Following the filmed instruction, there are printable worksheets that your child will use to complete the lesson. Other than the Here to Help Learning program, the only other thing you will want to have available is a 3 ring binder to organize your child's worksheets.

Here to Help Learning

There are two required days each week when using Here to Help Learning. The first day is the day when you watch your instructions. These are broken down into a few different sections and require pausing to play some quick games or work on some writing warm ups. This is the day to have mom or dad present to help with the pausing and to play the games with. We included big brother in our Sentence, No Sentence game.

The second day of the week your child will work on their Flying Solo work. This is simple work that has them slowly working towards their final writing piece, in our case it was a simple paragraph. This is the day that they will take what they have learned so far and use it in the writing process. This is also the day where you can step back and see what your child is learning so far.

Here to Help Learning Review

Ray Ray loves to use the computer and I love programs that make my day just a little bit more simple. I am still an active part of his learning, but I have help with Here to Help Learning. I am able to sit down on Sunday night, and take a look at what needs to be done for the week. I print the worksheets and get them ready to go into the binder and watch the video myself so I know what to expect.

Tuesday is the day we like to watch our filmed instruction together. We are able to spend some time together working through what Mrs. Mora wants us to do. Ray Ray loves the airplane, and the puppy pilot, Captain Knucklehead! He looks forward to these lessons and loves to play Sentence, No Sentence, in fact, he preps all week for this one game, to the point where I have to make up more to go with the game.

Here to Help Learning

The writing warm-up is included in this day. This includes a funny picture, a word box and space to write. This is a great way to get the minds thinking, and the way Mrs. Mora has it set up to include everyone from every writing level is awesome! Ray Ray started out, unsure of his writing abilities, but now, this is the second favorite part of writing. Little Miss likes to sit in and help up come up with our words in our word box. This warm-up makes writing fun.

Working on the writing project is a step by step process. Here to Help Learning has it all broken down into simple steps for your child. Writing a paragraph never seemed so simple when you take is slowly. And when you make hand movements to help you remember the different steps, they are that much more fun!

Thursday we move on to our Flying Solo part of the lesson. This is where Ray Ray works on his own asking me for help when he needs it. He started out not liking this day. He was nervous to be "flying solo" and was always asking questions. Now he has gained confidence knowing that he can do this. This is due to the small workloads that he is given. He is not taught how to write a paragraph and sent out to do it. He is learning with help at each step and he loves it!

That is about it…as simple as it sounds, it works! I love watching Ray Ray get better at his writing every week. I love seeing him excited to start a program day after day. This program has not only made my planning and teaching easier, it has made his learning easier. This is just what I love to see for him! Honestly, what more could you ask for? Right here you have a fun and interactive teacher, simple step by step instructions for both the parent and the student, and a lot of fun! Just what you need for any writer in your house!

We really enjoyed using our writing program, but Here to Help Learning offers many other programs as well. Stop over and check out these other reviews real quick, see if you can find a program you love!
