Easy Grammar Grade 9 ~ A Review

When you homeschool, you find yourself being a grammar nazi more than you would like to admit. Even correcting grammar on social media with the local sheriff's office. Yes, I did do that and yes, they responded. Now, making sure your children understand the same concepts so you don't look silly…well, that is another story! When you use Easy Grammar Ultimate Series Grade 9, a part of the Timberdoodle 9th Grade Curriculum Kit, you find an easier way to teach and enforce this subject.

Easy Grammar Review

What Is It

Easy Grammar Ultimate Series Grade 9, is 180 daily lessons that cover numerous different grammar topics each day. Each lesson contains five different topics; Capitalization, Punctuation, 2 different Parts of Speech, and Sentence Combining. Each day your child will work on building on what they know and adding new things in a simple way.

Easy Grammar is what they call a teaching text. Your child will be introduced to concepts, they will build upon these concepts and will review these concepts throughout the book. Easy Grammar is a mastery style of learning. These lessons should only take about 10 minutes or less, but when used at the beginning of every Language Arts lessons, you will see great results.

Easy Grammar Review

How We Used It

We did just as we wanted with this book. I would make sure that Moe Man did this before he did any other language arts lessons. Knowing that his mind was ready, made me more relaxed going into the more difficult lessons we needed to work on. There are some ideas on how to use the lessons, but you are the final deciding factor as to how you will actually teach it.

We would talk about new concepts before Moe Man worked on them. We would sit down together after to check answers and talk about what was wrong and why. Some days we would spend more time working a specific section, and the next day Moe Man could do it on his own. Any of the review sections, Moe Man would be able to work on without me, but we would always meet up before he moved on to make sure he was showing me that he could do it.

What We Thought Of It

Slowing down to think about each part of grammar frustrates Moe Man. He just wants to go, go and go. Using Easy Grammar was a great way to ease him into learning about grammar and his writing. I loved how simple this was. There were no silly doodles or colors that would distract him. We simply had the lesson and that was it.

Each lesson was one page. I didn't have to explain anything to Moe Man about what needed to be done, other than was day he was on. While he may need some explaining of the actual lesson, he knew that each day he had to do one page. This made it easy for both of us. He knew exactly what had to be done and I could explain without an argument! If you have a teenage boy, or even a teenager in general, you know the benefits of that!

This was a grammar program that we loved. This is something we both enjoyed using and Moe Man has picked up some tips so far! I can't wait to finish this one and move on to the next one!

What do you use for your grammar lessons in high school? Have you tried Easy Grammar?

NotebookingPages.com ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Are you frustrated with your current curriculum? Are you looking for something fun that will help your kids learn at the same time? Instead of being frustrated and tied down, why not use some fun journaling, and why not make it pretty, or handsome, with the notebboking pages that are designed for them. The Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership at NotebookingPages.com has everything you need for just this!

Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership

What Is It

NotebookingPages.com is a website that has a notebooking page for almost everything, with new ones being added. The different topics are A-Z, Bible/Character, Famous People, Fine Arts, Geography, History, Holidays, Language Arts and Science/Nature. Oh, and there is even a section call Any Study. This is where you can pick and choose what you need for your homeschool if it isn't already listed in any of the other sections!

Debra, the owner of NotebookingPages.com, is a homeschool mom herself who wanted something better for her kids. When she wasn't able to find, she made it. And I am thankful that she did! This is our go to page for all things notebooking!

How We Used It

There is no right or wrong way to use this site, just so you know right now. You will decide how you want to use it, and that is what you will do. We have used this site for YEARS, and each time I find something new to use in a new and different way. Each one of my kids use the resources here in different ways and each one loves what they do.

Little Miss

Little Miss is busy learning her letters. I am able to hop on in and find the letter we are learning about in the A-Z section and we can use the pages to go with that letter. We love coloring the big letters and making the fun little books. We are able to draw a picture(s) of things that start with letter and practice writing words that start with that letter. She loves just having her own books to read to Baby Girl.

Ray Ray

Ray Ray is busy learning about birds and clouds this summer. We are finding out that the Charlotte Mason style homeschooing is best for him, and these notebooking pages help us to learn in a different way. I simply printed up some pages on the different birds in our area and let him find the information he wanted to learn about them. He is busy making his own bird book, and loves watching the birds with his book. We have also had fun simply staring at the clouds. The nature study section has a great collection of pages on clouds and we are able to write about what we see and find the difference in the clouds to the weather and how they both seem to change at the same time.

Moe Man

Moe Man is even busy with these pages. He has found a style he liked in the Any Study section and used this as a way to take notes for his government course. He takes one page per lesson and fills it full of what he is learning. There are some really neat little squares on some pages, and he is able to use those to draw what he has read about. This is a fun way of notetaking that you would not get from simple lined paper. I love seeing what he comes up with each day!

What We Thought

I love these pages. I love having that one site that has what I need to make a boring subject fun. That one site where I can replace the worksheets with fun sheets. I love that there are two different styles of lines with each unit and that I can pick and choose which one will work for us each day. The Lifetime Membership has been worth it to our family and we will continue to use these pages long into the future of our homeschooling days. If you have to pick one thing for your homeschool, pick this. This is essential in our homeschool and I think you will feel the same way about it in yours.

Super Teacher Worksheets ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

What do you do when your child does not understand something? What if you need something fun to practice what you are learning? Where do you go for that? I have fallen in love with the Individual Membership over at Super Teacher Worksheets for just these types of problems!

Super Teacher Worksheets

What It Is

This is a wonderful website that has worksheets and games for preschoolers and beyond. Most of the “grades” are up to the 5th grade, but I loved the practice that these were able to give to Moe Man in the 9th grade when it comes to some subjects!

This is not a full curriculum in any way, but can be used to supplement any curriculum that you may have. All major subjects are covered and within those subjects, all major categories are there. You are even able to make your own extra practice sheets when needed.

How We Used This

I love supplementing when I want my kids to practice something a little more. I don’t like looking all over and wasting my time trying to find just the right thing. That is where Super Teacher Worksheets came into play. I would look at our lesson plan, and look on the menu, find the matching worksheets, pick the one, or two, that I wanted and away we went.

Ray Ray has been asking me for some time to have a color by number like Little Miss had, when I found the scarecrow addition color by number, I was thrilled! Not only did he get what he wanted, mommy got what she wanted by having him practice his addition skills.

Super Teacher Worksheets

When Moe Man forgot about algebraic expressions (really who remembers that stuff anyway!), I was able to find some simple worksheets that refreshed his memory in a fun, non-threatening way. When his double digit multiplication was missing a step, I was able to find fun, colorful worksheets to help him practice. (These simple things are a MUST for him and his learning).

Super Teacher Worksheets

And when Little Miss wanted to be like her brothers, I was able to add some letter worksheets into her daily work! There is truly something for everyone here!

With all the supplementing, I was able to find something for everyone to do in different subjects, so we are using this website daily. Each worksheet is at least two pages, with the answers included. When printing, I would only print the student pages to help save on paper and ink. I could always go back and check the answers on the computer. The only time this did not work was when it was a build your own worksheet. That is where the File Cabinet comes in, just remember to save your worksheet to the file cabinet before you generate it…I forgot this step the first time!

What Did We Think

I love this website! While I was given an individual membership for this review, I have my own account that I set up and purchased before this review. I plan to continue my membership after this review as well. This is a site that I have found very useful in our homeschooling. It is a site that I do use on a daily basis. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

If you need more opinions, check out these other reviews from The Crew! If you do, or have had this membership, what is your favorite feature of it?

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Is it really time to start planning the new school year? I feel like summer has just started! This week Moe Man is doing his fun testing, so we have limited school. What better time to plan for the new year?

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Moe Man is going to be in 9th grade! I am not ready for this, but I have no choice. Being in 9th grade, a freshman, means that I have to get more serious along with him. Being more serious for me means tracking more and grading more. No more pass or fail options. How will I do this? I am going to use Homeschool Planet to help me out. Remember my review?

That was the simple part. But now I have to actually teach him something! To make sure I am covering everything I need to cover I have printed up some of the High School forms from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus. She has everything you need for school planners, and they are FREE!

Math

Math this year is going to be Unlock Math. You will hear more about that in the near future. We are doing the Pre-Algebra. This is the math level that Moe Man is at right now. He is loving this online way of learning the math and I love that he is learning!

English

English this year is going to be a combination of a few different things. For writing we are going to continue to use our IEW Student Writing Intensive Level B. This was the first time that Moe Man loved to write, so we are going to keep using it!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

We are adding in Sharon Watson’s Illuminating Literature: When Worlds Collide for our literature study. I love the book list with this program and I can’t wait to share our review with you!

We are also continuing our study of words by using Dynamic Literacy. I loved this program. I loved how simple yet effective the daily lessons were and I could see things clicking in Moe Man’s brain…this is good!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Science

This year for science we are doing Homeschool Astronomy. While this is considered a science elective, Moe Man really wants to learn Astronomy, so we are learning Astronomy. I would much rather let him have his way (when he wants to learn something) than have to fight with him every day when it comes to school. Plus, he got a telescope from his biological mom, so we need an excuse to use it, right!?!?!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Social Studies

This year we are going to learn about the American Government while using A Journey in Liberty. I personally feel that a study of the U.S. Constitution is very much needed right now and this program looks like a great one!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Electives

For the electives this year, I decided to pick home economics. I picked this and Moe Man has no choice! I decided this on the day I asked him to make his own mac and cheese and he didn’t know what to do. That is when I realized that I was babying my boys too much and I don’t want to be that mom who has that boy!

For Home Ec, I have decided to make my own curriculum, but to follow the ideas that Angie from Real Life at Home gives in her eBook, Training Your Children in Home Economics. I love this book and I know that I will be able to make a curriculum for Moe Man and even adapt it to make a curriculum for Ray Ray also!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

So there it is, the list of classes that I will be having Moe Man work on for his Freshman year. I am sure that we will add some things later as we get used to the schedule. And yes, we have the bible, but it is just him reading from Jesus Calling and from his bible at this time.

What are you using for your lessons this year? Do you have a Freshman? What classes will they be taking?

Fix It! Grammar from IEW ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

IEW Fix It! Grammar

How do you teach your child grammar? What about a child who despises everything to do with writing? You could let them become an editor of a story like the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) lets them do in their Fix It! Grammar Books. Moe Man and I had the chance to use Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree [Book 1], both the Teacher’s Manual and the print copy of the Student Book.

What Is It?

IEW’s Fix It! Grammar is a simple way to work with your child on grammar daily for only about 10-15 minutes. The Fix It! Grammar program is a full grammar program for 3rd grade and up. We started with book one after taking this placement test.

The Teacher’s Manual is a lovely spiral bound book. Included in this book are the weekly lessons, with the answers, explanations of those answers, scope and sequence for the year and the grammar glossary. Also, at the beginning of the teacher’s manual is the way to download your student book for FREE along with two e-audios for your enjoyment. Yes, I said you get to download your student’s book for FREE and they even give you permission to download it as many times as you need to for your immediate family’s use. All of that for just $19.00!

Now if you want the actual printed Student Book, IEW has that too. For $15 you are able to get this in the same spiral bound style as the teacher manual. You get the daily lessons separated by weeks, the grammar glossary and the grammar cards to help your student remember what they have already learned.

IEW Fix It! Grammar

Besides the teacher manual and the student book, the only other recommended/needed items are a notebook for vocabulary words and the re-writing of the passage and an envelope for storing your grammar cards.

How Did We Use It?

Every day, for 4 days a week, we would sit down and work on these lessons. Day 1 would include me spending more time with Moe Man than any other day as we went over the new rules for the week. I would make sure he understood what we talked about, confirm he remembered the information from previous weeks, and make sure that he had his grammar cards cut out and ready to go. We would go over the daily vocabulary words, with Moe Man using his new dictionary skills to look them up and find the correct definition for the word within the sentence.

Once I made sure he had it, Moe Man was excited to work on his grammar…yes, I said excited! On days 2-4, he would take his time and go over the passage, do the markings that he knows at that point and have me check it. After making sure that he had it marked correctly, he would proceed to re-write it in his notebook. At the end of every week, he would than read the story up to the point where he was. I would take this a step farther than suggested, and I would ask him to guess what would be happening next. This is my kid who doesn’t want anything to do with writing or analyzing his writing. But this is the kid who loves to read…and to become the editor of a story…well let’s just say this is different from most other grammar lessons!

IEW Fix It! Grammar

What Is Our Opinion?

I can tell you, after using this program for some time now, I really love it! There is very little prep each day. The word simple is the only word I can use to truly describe this! Moe Man always asks to do this first in the day. He is understanding the simple layout, the repetition of daily use helps him remember and since it only takes 15 minutes he can’t complain about the time it takes! In fact, this kid who doesn’t want anything to do with writing, this kid who fights me when I try to work with him on grammar, this kid has asked me if we could please continue using this program after the review is over! He even went so far as to ask if there were more so that he could do a different book next year for grammar! If this kid is asking me this, than you should be able to guess that I have a good opinion about this grammar program!

We love this, and the fact that the kids are working on a full story through the whole year makes them want to keep going so they can finish it. We did book 1, there are 6 books total and each book is a different story. That makes for 6 years of grammar. Moe Man won’t be able to finish all of them…unless he really wants to, but I am hoping that Ray Ray, Little Miss and the new baby will all be able to start these right away and finish all 6! IEW has made a wonderful grammar program that is easy to use, but effective at teaching your child what they need to know in a fun way!

Stop by and check out these other reviews, and see some of the other books they were able to review!
