If You Were Me and Lived In…Books by Carole P. Roman ~ A Homeschool Crew Review

We love stories, and stories help us learn in our homeschool. Sometimes we find the right kind of books that make us feel like we are actually in the book. These kinds of books are ones we love to have on the bookshelf for lessons, or just plain fun reading time. We are super excited to share reviews of four new books brought to you by Carole P. Roman and Awaywegomedia.com. These books are:

If You Were Me and Lived in…Ancient Greece (An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time) (Volume 1)

If You Were Me and Lived in…Renaissance Italy (An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time) (Volume 2)

If You Were Me and Lived in…the Middle Ages (An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time) (Volume 6)

If You Were Me and Lived in…the American West (Volume 7)

If You Were Me

These four books captured the kid's attention from the minute I showed them to them! Each of these books takes the kids into the time period and shows them what they would have been doing, what their names would have been, what their house would have been like. The kids are put in the book instead of just learning a history lesson.

If You Were Me and Lived in ... {by Carole P. Roman and Awaywegomedia.com}

Each of these four books contain the story of the time era. At the end, they all have a glossary of the words you may or may not know. The Renaissance Italy and The American West also had a Famous People section at the end. Carole also offers some simple study questions for a select few of her books on her blog. We were able to use these with Ancient Greece, the Middle Ages and the American West. These were a great way to add even more to an already great book!

Each morning, we would work on slowly reading through the books. We started with Ancient Greece and fell in love right away. This was a great way for the boys to work on their history (each are working through this time era in their other history lessons) and Little Miss was able to get a taste of history without being overwhelmed. In fact, she loved answering the questions just as much, if not more than the boys did.

While we read about Ancient Greece, we learned of the different gods and goddesses. We learned how and why they worshipped the gods they did and the kids were surprised to learn that everyone drank wine instead of water!

If You Were Me

Ray Ray really enjoyed spending time reading If You Were Me and Lived in…the American West. He read this book numerous times on his own. He loved reading about the actual travel to the West. This personally reminded me of the Oregon Trail game, but in book form. He would talk about the book as if he had just traveled the journey and would tell me all about how I would have to cook over an open fire and how he had to help dad push the covered wagon through the mud. I loved hearing him talk as though this had happened and how much stuck with him because of this way of thinking!

If You Were Me

We loved reading these books, finding out what our names could have been, and how we would have lived. Little Miss loved the pictures in If You Were Me and Lived in…Renaissance Italy and we spent some time learning about the different social classes in the Middle Ages. If you are looking for some great living history books for your house, you need to check out the If You Were Me series. There are more than just four of these books, so make sure to head on over and check out the reviews from the other crew families to find the other books!

The Cat of Bubastes ~ A Homeschool Crew Review

Are you ready to go back in time to Ancient Egypt? Are you ready to join in the adventure, the mystery, the suspense? Are you ready to follow along with Amuba and Jethro as they are captured by Egyptians and enslaved? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to check out The Cat of Bubastes from Heirloom Audio Productions.

The Cat of Bubastes

For this review, we were blessed to have received a physical copy of the two CDs and access to the bonus items. These bonus items included, Study Guide, a soundtrack, an mp3 of the audio drama, an ebook, a behind-the-scenes video, a couple of posters, and more. With all of this, we were set to start off on our adventure!

We used this package deal as a part of our history lessons. We have always loved the audio dramas from Heirloom Audio Productions, and while they don't always align with our history time period, we got lucky this time around.

The Cat of Bubastes

Mom started off this time by reading through the study guide. I wanted an idea of what we would be learning instead of us just jumping in to the listening part of the fun! I love the study guides that are available, and love being able to use them to make this a true history lesson. Each section of questions contains three different sections. These sections are Listening Well, Thinking Further and Defining Word.

I started each lesson off by talking to the kids about the Listening Well questions. I wanted them to know what to be listening for. Each track on the CDs has its own section in the Study Guide. This allows you to pick and choose how much you want to do. Since we were not going to stop every 3-4 minutes, mom picked the questions she would be asking.

Study Guide
Study Guide

After the kids knew what to listen for, we started listening. I allowed the younger kids to color while listening, and would look for time period appropriate printables for them to work on. This kept their fingers busy while still keeping their ears open. After the selected tracks we would stop and work on the questions. We would work on a Thinking Further question or two. I also worked with the kids on making sure they understood the defining words and would help them if they didn't.

Once again, we were pleased with our experience with Heirloom Audio Productions. The kids get excited every time they hear the opening song! They have been known to steal my CDs and sneak off to their rooms to listen to the stories over and over again. The Cat of Bubastes has been no exception. The sound, the action, the feeling that you get when you listen to this audio drama. You get pulled into the story of Amuba and his journey. You hold your breath waiting to hear more at every turn. The gasps from the kids when the unexpected happens, the sheer delight when the good happens, the look of fear on their faces when the not so good happens. I saw so much more from them during listening to this audio drama than I have seen while they watch their favorite TV shows.

The Cat of Bubastes has earned a spot on the shelf next to the rest of our Heirloom Audio and G.A. Henty collection. This has been loved, and will continue to be loved in the house for years to come!

Have you fallen in love with Heirloom Audio Productions yet? What is your favorite one? What do you hope they come up with next?

NotebookingPages.com ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Are you frustrated with your current curriculum? Are you looking for something fun that will help your kids learn at the same time? Instead of being frustrated and tied down, why not use some fun journaling, and why not make it pretty, or handsome, with the notebboking pages that are designed for them. The Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership at NotebookingPages.com has everything you need for just this!

Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership

What Is It

NotebookingPages.com is a website that has a notebooking page for almost everything, with new ones being added. The different topics are A-Z, Bible/Character, Famous People, Fine Arts, Geography, History, Holidays, Language Arts and Science/Nature. Oh, and there is even a section call Any Study. This is where you can pick and choose what you need for your homeschool if it isn't already listed in any of the other sections!

Debra, the owner of NotebookingPages.com, is a homeschool mom herself who wanted something better for her kids. When she wasn't able to find, she made it. And I am thankful that she did! This is our go to page for all things notebooking!

How We Used It

There is no right or wrong way to use this site, just so you know right now. You will decide how you want to use it, and that is what you will do. We have used this site for YEARS, and each time I find something new to use in a new and different way. Each one of my kids use the resources here in different ways and each one loves what they do.

Little Miss

Little Miss is busy learning her letters. I am able to hop on in and find the letter we are learning about in the A-Z section and we can use the pages to go with that letter. We love coloring the big letters and making the fun little books. We are able to draw a picture(s) of things that start with letter and practice writing words that start with that letter. She loves just having her own books to read to Baby Girl.

Ray Ray

Ray Ray is busy learning about birds and clouds this summer. We are finding out that the Charlotte Mason style homeschooing is best for him, and these notebooking pages help us to learn in a different way. I simply printed up some pages on the different birds in our area and let him find the information he wanted to learn about them. He is busy making his own bird book, and loves watching the birds with his book. We have also had fun simply staring at the clouds. The nature study section has a great collection of pages on clouds and we are able to write about what we see and find the difference in the clouds to the weather and how they both seem to change at the same time.

Moe Man

Moe Man is even busy with these pages. He has found a style he liked in the Any Study section and used this as a way to take notes for his government course. He takes one page per lesson and fills it full of what he is learning. There are some really neat little squares on some pages, and he is able to use those to draw what he has read about. This is a fun way of notetaking that you would not get from simple lined paper. I love seeing what he comes up with each day!

What We Thought

I love these pages. I love having that one site that has what I need to make a boring subject fun. That one site where I can replace the worksheets with fun sheets. I love that there are two different styles of lines with each unit and that I can pick and choose which one will work for us each day. The Lifetime Membership has been worth it to our family and we will continue to use these pages long into the future of our homeschooling days. If you have to pick one thing for your homeschool, pick this. This is essential in our homeschool and I think you will feel the same way about it in yours.

A Schoolhouse Crew Review (3)

Want to see how other families have put these pages to use? Head on over and read these other reviews with me. I can't wait to find new ideas to use in our homeschool!

Civil War Study with All American History

We have been keeping busy with our history review these last two weeks. Remember I told you we were starting All American History  with Moe Man? Well,  we   have had so much fun that I had to share an update with you!

All American History

All American History Vol 2 is a wonderful program that we are using for our American History Credit for High School this year. We have been looking for something that would be a great fit for both mom and kid, and we have found it! Moe Man loves his history, and most of the programs I looked at just didn't quite seem to have him interacting as much as I wanted to be. Even though he is working on high school credit, I want him having fun while he is doing it!

These last two weeks we have continued our studies of the Civil War. We learned even more about the Confederate and the Union states. I love the fact that the worksheets use different elements of learning. While learning about the different sides of this war, we are able to color our map and have that visual of who is going again who. Not only does this help us see where the war is happening, but Moe Man can learn more about where the states are located. I get to get an idea of where he is at in preparation for our Geography studies in the future.

All American History Vol 2

So, here we are. We are not just filling the blanks, or picking a letter. We are filling out our maps. Seeing where exactly everything is happening. But that is not all. With our studies in All American History Vol 2, we are given different topics to dig further into during each lesson. We can pick one, two, three or all four. Each one of these Further Study questions makes Moe Man leave the textbook and look somewhere else for the answer. We have some good reference books at home and in our library, but he is also learning about the joys of Google, and reliable online sources. This puts the learning in his hands and he is able to have fun with this.

Further Study

When we started AAH2, we had not yet memorized the presidents up to this point in history. I found this idea in our Project Possibilities, and have had fun watching, and learning with, Moe Man. As we learn a new president we are able to add his picture to the wall.

Project Possibilites

Speaking of the wall, our timeline has grown! We wanted to do a wall timeline, but didn't know where to put it. We have our schoolroom that has been doubling as dad's office, but we are running out of room. Moe Man might love history, but not enough to have a timeline in his room! So, we are taking our timeline to a notebook. This "traveling timeline" has been a great way to see our way through history. I have a nice list of people, places and events in my teacher's guide for each unit. This makes it easy for me to know who to look for and where abouts they should go when we put them "on the line".

Timelines

And I can't leave this week without telling you more about my teacher's guide. This book has everything I need to feel confident enough to teach this course. Not only do I have the resources for what to learn, I have weekly checklists. This simple little checklist shows me what we can do for each lesson. With this I know what to make sure is done and what to add when I plan out my week. This is awesome when you are homeschooling one, two, three or three and a half kids! Not only do I have an awesome set up for a plan, but I have some really simple answer keys! Now you can have answer keys, or you can have an answer key that is a mini picture of the actual worksheet with the answers written in for you. This is so much easier than trying to follow a number or a follow a line. I actually love correcting these worksheets due to the lack of confusion!

Teachers guide AAH2

Now, before I write a book…haha, can you tell that I love this curriculum? I have to go and help Moe Man with his biography of our 16th president. Who knows who that is?? I will be back to tell you more. Ask me any questions and I will find an awesome answer for you!

God Bless!!

Amanda

All American History Introduction

All American History Introduction

American History, a subject that is very important to our family as a homeschooling family. A subject that should be fun and important in all American households! But what kind of program is a good fit? We have tried many different ones that Moe Man has followed along with, but then we found a hands on program that Moe Man loves! Let me introduce you to All American History Vol 2 from Bright Ideas Press.

All American History Introduction

All American History (AAH) is a complete history program for grades 6-12. How is that possible? Buy one program and use it for numerous different grade levels? Well, that is because, the older your child gets, the more YOU as their teacher will add to their learning. That is the first thing I noticed when looking into this program. I can pick and choose what Moe Man will be learning. I can take it easy one week and add extra another, all while keeping the main focus the same.

Now there again, if I really wanted to, I could add Ray Ray and Little Miss into the mix of this subject, and still be able to make it work for their levels! The teacher's guide gives me all the ideas to make that happen along with the All American History Jr guide that has all the extras put together to go with the Student Reader. That is something we will be thinking about in the future, but right now they are doing Mystery of History 1. Yes, I have 3 kids doing two different history eras. It gets difficult at times, but AAH makes it possible for Moe Man to work individually as needed.

All American History Introduction

To make the most of using AAH for your high schooler, I would recommend the Teacher's Guide, Student Reader, Student Activity Book, the All American History High School Test Packet. We are also using the Historical Timeline Figures. These supplies will get you a full 32 weekly lessons.

All American History Introduction

I was so excited when the box came in the mail…I might have been stalking the mail lady for the week of this delivery! As a curriculum addict, finding something that you like AND your child likes, well…that is the best thing in the world. I was happy to see Moe Man just as interested in the books as I was. He is usually one to shrug off a new book or curriculum, but this time he actually stopped and started looking through the books.

All American History Introduction

Instead of waiting for the new week to begin so we could start our new history program, Moe Man wanted to start right away. This is something that shocked me. Moe Man doesn't like change, but after looking at the books, he was ready for a change mid-week. After reading through the teacher's guide over night, I was confident to start the lessons the next day. The teacher's guide has everything listed in an easy to read and understand way. Right away I was book marking the different pages and loving everything I was seeing!

We are two weeks into our new history curriculum, and we are in love with this program. I have been adding the further study questions in and having Moe Man read from the Book Lists that are provided with the teacher's guide. The further study questions take the student further into the subject and have them think in different ways. These questions work for having Moe Man actually work on his writing (even though he doesn't like this) and see what he has taken in.

All American History Introduction

The book lists are broken down by Unit first and are broken down one more time by "grade". You can have your child pick from the list with their grade level, or you can assign which book to have them read. You can do one, or more than one. We are using our books for both history and language lessons. I let Moe Man pick one from his grade level and we pick one from a lower level that we read aloud together. This works for us. The nice thing is, you can do what works for you and still get a great education from this curriculum.

I can't wait to tell you more about this wonderful program, but for now I need to quickly plan out our next week of school! I will come back in a few days and tell you more, I will see you than!

God Bless and Keep You!!

Amanda

Progeny Press: Sam the Minuteman ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

ProgenyPress Review

Finding just the right study guide for a younger child and a shorter book is sometimes hard to do. While you might find those with all the lovely pictures and cut outs and prep work, sometimes you just want the good old fashioned study guide!

ProgenyPress Review

When given the chance to use the Sam the Minuteman Study Guide from Progeny Press, I was excited! Finally something that I could use with Ray Ray that would keep him focus on what needed to be done, not what color the whatever was!

What It Is

This is a straight forward study guide from Progeny Press. We have used their study guides in the past and loved them so we were excited to use this one for Ray Ray. This study guide covers the before, during and after activities to go with your story. This is just the study guide and does not include the book (I found it at the library and bought it from Amazon because we liked it so much!)

ProgenyPress Review

While he was reading the book, it was all him, I was not allowed to help, Ray Ray would remember something from the map, and you could see the dots connecting in his head. He remembered talking about something and then reading about it, and he loved this feeling!

While most of the big kid study guides have you using the guide while you read, I did not find that necessary with this one. The book was short enough that we only took two days to read it, but the activities last us the whole week.

How We Used This

I set aside our reading program for a week and we used this. We were able to start our literature lesson with Ray Ray looking at the map and learning about the distance and space between something on a map. After the map, I sat back and listened to him reading to me.

After the reading was done, we started working on the worksheets. Each activity focused on something different in the world of literature. It was nice to see that even though this wasn’t all pretty and colorful, it was still geared for grades 1-3.

The first activity was vocabulary. It was a little difficult for Ray Ray to write the definitions, but we worked together and he did it. There was plenty of room for his big writing on the two lines provided. And although the words were “big” he picked up on the meaning and was able to easily use them in a sentence. This made him feel grown up!

Another section was the Looking at the Story section. This is always my favorite. This is where I see if the kids remember what they read. While I would make Moe Man use complete sentences in this section, I was easy on Ray Ray, I had him just write the answer, but he had to tell me in a complete sentence (the joy of homeschooling and doing it your way!). The questions were not hard, but they were either simple or thought provoking. Both perfect in my book.

ProgenyPress Review

The Thinking About…section was a great way to make a young child truly think about what was happening. With some True/False statements to studying the Declaration of Independence. It was simple yet effective.

Finally, you have the After-you-read Activities. These activities took what you learned and let you have fun! We looked over the activities and decided to work on our own sequel to Sam the Minuteman. This was a great way to tell a story in our own words. As soon as we get more ink, we will be making our three cornered hats!

What We Thought

We really liked this study guide! It had all the elements of the big kid ones yet was perfect for Ray Ray. I could tell by doing this study guide, Ray Ray learned many new things about the book and the history that he would not have learned if we didn’t use it!

I enjoyed the simple print and use set up. There was no cut this, buy this or print this on this kind of paper. Just print and go! While I was able to easily help with the answers, there was an answer key at the end if I needed it.

Ray Ray really loved solving the word mystery (vocabulary) and I loved that he thought he was playing games not doing school!

Another great point, is the Christian perspective that is put in each of these guides. Being able to relate the stories to the Bible is a great wya to include our bible into our daily life!

These study guides have not disappointed us! There are so many different options and stories, check out these other reviews on some of the other guides!

YWAM Publishing ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

YWAM Publishing

Who really likes the boring history books? Who would rather sit down with a good book, and when you are done realize that you have just completed a good history unit? I know which one I like better!

YWAM Publishing

YWAM Publishing has some great titles in their Heroes of History Series, but I can’t wait to tell you more about Abraham Lincoln: A New Birth of Freedom and the Unit Study Curriculum Guide that goes along with the book.

What It Is

This softcover 218 page book is the life story of Abraham Lincoln. Now this isn’t a boring history book telling of Abraham Lincoln, it is not even a long drawn out biography. This is a story of Abraham Lincoln. This is written in an easy to understand and even easier to enjoy format.

While the book itself is just a history story, when you add in the Unit Study Curriculum Guide, you now have yourself a perfect Unit Study on Abraham Lincoln!

YWAM Publishing

How We Used It

The first thing that happened in our house when I opened the package and found this book, was it disappeared! Every child wanted to see the book on Abraham Lincoln. He is a favorite guy in this house! After mom finally got it back, it was time to figure out how we were going to use this.

There are many different options when it comes to these books. Simply collect the books and let your children read, or you read aloud to them. The next would be to utilize the Unit Study option and turn this book into a great way to learn. We did the second!

The Unit Study Curriculum Guide has many wonderful options! It was hard to pick and choose what we wanted to use, knowing that using them all would stress my kids out. I decided that each child would pick one of the key quotes listed and study that during this whole book. They took their quote and they used it for handwriting practice and memorization. We even looked into learning more about each quote, when and where it was said and the true meaning of it.

The chapter questions that were provided were a perfect way to see what the children remembered from my reading to them. There were only 4 for each chapter and they each are the same type for all the chapters. I loved how this was like this because I could rotate the questions between the kids while knowing that they would have a different type the next day.

We also used the ideas for Essay Questions and Creative writing. This is a tough subject in our house, so whenever I find good ideas on topics the kids love, we go overboard! All while still having fun! While Moe Man enjoyed the creative writing ideas better, he was still able to easily work on the essay questions. The best part? Mom choose how long they had to be instead of the writing in the book saying so. I could decide what needed more or what needed less writing.

What We Thought

Wow! I never knew that a book so good, could actually be so full of learning and yet have the kids enjoy it! I loved every minute of reading this book. I was able to read it out loud with no problems, no boredom for me, so I had more fun reading it! The kids didn’t want me to stop. They didn’t care that it was a “school” book, all they cared about was how good it was.

The Unit Study Curriculum Guide was so full of fun and learning, I loved it! It was not overwhelming since it was broken down so nicely by chapter. There were so many different levels of learning included, that no matter who your child is, you will find something that will help them take the book and use it for school.

YWAM Publishing has so many different books in this series you are sure to find what you are looking for. Hop on over and see some more of them by reading these other reviews!

Super Teacher Worksheets ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

What do you do when your child does not understand something? What if you need something fun to practice what you are learning? Where do you go for that? I have fallen in love with the Individual Membership over at Super Teacher Worksheets for just these types of problems!

Super Teacher Worksheets

What It Is

This is a wonderful website that has worksheets and games for preschoolers and beyond. Most of the “grades” are up to the 5th grade, but I loved the practice that these were able to give to Moe Man in the 9th grade when it comes to some subjects!

This is not a full curriculum in any way, but can be used to supplement any curriculum that you may have. All major subjects are covered and within those subjects, all major categories are there. You are even able to make your own extra practice sheets when needed.

How We Used This

I love supplementing when I want my kids to practice something a little more. I don’t like looking all over and wasting my time trying to find just the right thing. That is where Super Teacher Worksheets came into play. I would look at our lesson plan, and look on the menu, find the matching worksheets, pick the one, or two, that I wanted and away we went.

Ray Ray has been asking me for some time to have a color by number like Little Miss had, when I found the scarecrow addition color by number, I was thrilled! Not only did he get what he wanted, mommy got what she wanted by having him practice his addition skills.

Super Teacher Worksheets

When Moe Man forgot about algebraic expressions (really who remembers that stuff anyway!), I was able to find some simple worksheets that refreshed his memory in a fun, non-threatening way. When his double digit multiplication was missing a step, I was able to find fun, colorful worksheets to help him practice. (These simple things are a MUST for him and his learning).

Super Teacher Worksheets

And when Little Miss wanted to be like her brothers, I was able to add some letter worksheets into her daily work! There is truly something for everyone here!

With all the supplementing, I was able to find something for everyone to do in different subjects, so we are using this website daily. Each worksheet is at least two pages, with the answers included. When printing, I would only print the student pages to help save on paper and ink. I could always go back and check the answers on the computer. The only time this did not work was when it was a build your own worksheet. That is where the File Cabinet comes in, just remember to save your worksheet to the file cabinet before you generate it…I forgot this step the first time!

What Did We Think

I love this website! While I was given an individual membership for this review, I have my own account that I set up and purchased before this review. I plan to continue my membership after this review as well. This is a site that I have found very useful in our homeschooling. It is a site that I do use on a daily basis. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

If you need more opinions, check out these other reviews from The Crew! If you do, or have had this membership, what is your favorite feature of it?

Heirloom Audio Productions: With Lee in Virginia ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

With Lee in Virginia Review

Well, I have to say that Heirloom Audio Productions has done it again! We have spent some time, 2 ½ hours to be exact, listening to their newest audio theater presentation of With Lee in Virginia.
With Lee in Virginia Review

What It Is

With the purchase of the Family Four-Pack you will receive the 2 ½ hour long audio theater on two CDs and access to their special bonuses online. The special bonuses include the MP3 download of the story, eBook of the original G.A. Henty story of With Lee in Virginia, the PDF download of the Study Guide to go along with the story and a beautiful printable of a saying from Robert E. Lee.

How We Used This

Just like every audio theater we have listened to from Heirloom Audio Productions, we first listen to the whole story. This time we spent some hot days hiding out in the house and keeping cool with the TV off and the story going. These stories are so full of adventure we have not had a problem getting the attention of all the kids and the adults!

After fully listening to the story and getting that “What is going to happen next” out of our system, we downloaded the study guide and took a look at it. We slowly re-listened to the whole story, working one track at a time and using the study guide to help us learn more about the story as we went along.

Each section of the study guide started out with Listening Well Questions. We read these questions first, listened to the track and went back to answer them. This was a perfect way to work on Moe Man’s comprehension skills as a family and to introduce reading (or in this case listening) comprehension to the little ones. Without grading looming over their heads, the kids were having a good time talking about the story by answering the questions.

Next, we had some Thinking Further Questions. These questions were my favorite. These made us learn more about the time era and what was happening at that time. We loved the fun little activities, like finding places on the map where the story was taking place during each track.

And of course, you can’t learn anything unless you know the words they are talking about. We would use the computer dictionary to help us find some of the words we couldn’t find in the “new” dictionary we have at home. Listening to 4 year old Little Miss using these new words, and in the right context has been fun!

I loved printing the quote from Robert E. Lee to his son and hanging it up for everyone to see in the house. This is not just a simple picture with words on it, this is a gorgeous picture with a meaningful quote, “Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, You should never wish to do less.”, on it. This quote fits well with how we strive to be in our house and made a perfect addition to our school room bulletin board.

What We Thought

I have yet to be disappointed with an audio theater presentation from Heirloom Audio Productions. With a cast like Sean Astin, Kirk Cameron, Brian Blessed, Chris Anthony, Kelsey Lansdowne and Jim Weiss, why would you be disappointed!?!?! We were hooked from before we even put the CD into the player! We knew what was coming! This, like their previous titles, is full of adventure and grabs your attention from the first introduction song! In our family of music lovers, the songs get us.

Once we started listening to the story, we were able to picture everything! Tony and Vincent were real in our minds! We could see them, see their struggles. There were all the sound effects, splashing in the water, the roster crowing in the morning and even the struggle of the slaves against their masters. This one got the kids. We had to pause and discuss this period in time to the younger kids. They were upset to hear about people being treated as property, but I felt this was a good way to introduce the concept and be able to talk about it with them.

When you have three kids who are full of energy sit down and truly enjoy listening to a story played out in their minds, you know you have a winner! I cannot say enough good about this, or any of their CDs! If you are in need of a way to make history come alive, or even something good to listen to, this is the way to do it! Not only do I get to enjoy this with the kids, but Daddy takes these CDs with him when he goes to work in the big truck and enjoys a break from the radio. Needless to say, he was just as happy as the rest of us to find out that he had a new story to listen to!

Still have some doubts about what I am saying? Check out the 3 minute preview on the website and you will be hooked!! I have never personally enjoyed history as much as I do when I can close my eyes and listen to it with Heirloom Audio Productions! Only one question from our family….when is the next one coming out?? We don’t even care what it is, we just want to know when!!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Is it really time to start planning the new school year? I feel like summer has just started! This week Moe Man is doing his fun testing, so we have limited school. What better time to plan for the new year?

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Moe Man is going to be in 9th grade! I am not ready for this, but I have no choice. Being in 9th grade, a freshman, means that I have to get more serious along with him. Being more serious for me means tracking more and grading more. No more pass or fail options. How will I do this? I am going to use Homeschool Planet to help me out. Remember my review?

That was the simple part. But now I have to actually teach him something! To make sure I am covering everything I need to cover I have printed up some of the High School forms from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus. She has everything you need for school planners, and they are FREE!

Math

Math this year is going to be Unlock Math. You will hear more about that in the near future. We are doing the Pre-Algebra. This is the math level that Moe Man is at right now. He is loving this online way of learning the math and I love that he is learning!

English

English this year is going to be a combination of a few different things. For writing we are going to continue to use our IEW Student Writing Intensive Level B. This was the first time that Moe Man loved to write, so we are going to keep using it!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

We are adding in Sharon Watson’s Illuminating Literature: When Worlds Collide for our literature study. I love the book list with this program and I can’t wait to share our review with you!

We are also continuing our study of words by using Dynamic Literacy. I loved this program. I loved how simple yet effective the daily lessons were and I could see things clicking in Moe Man’s brain…this is good!

Science

This year for science we are doing Homeschool Astronomy. While this is considered a science elective, Moe Man really wants to learn Astronomy, so we are learning Astronomy. I would much rather let him have his way (when he wants to learn something) than have to fight with him every day when it comes to school. Plus, he got a telescope from his biological mom, so we need an excuse to use it, right!?!?!

Social Studies

This year we are going to learn about the American Government while using A Journey in Liberty. I personally feel that a study of the U.S. Constitution is very much needed right now and this program looks like a great one!

Electives

For the electives this year, I decided to pick home economics. I picked this and Moe Man has no choice! I decided this on the day I asked him to make his own mac and cheese and he didn’t know what to do. That is when I realized that I was babying my boys too much and I don’t want to be that mom who has that boy!

For Home Ec, I have decided to make my own curriculum, but to follow the ideas that Angie from Real Life at Home gives in her eBook, Training Your Children in Home Economics. I love this book and I know that I will be able to make a curriculum for Moe Man and even adapt it to make a curriculum for Ray Ray also!

So there it is, the list of classes that I will be having Moe Man work on for his Freshman year. I am sure that we will add some things later as we get used to the schedule. And yes, we have the bible, but it is just him reading from Jesus Calling and from his bible at this time.

What are you using for your lessons this year? Do you have a Freshman? What classes will they be taking?
