Ye Old Pirates ~ Poppins Book Nook

YeOldPirate

Well, another month has gone by. Here we are at the end of July…do you know what that means? Another month of Poppins Book Nook! We had so much fun this time around with the theme of Ye Old Pirate!

For our book this month we read the story How I Became A Pirate! By Melinda Long and David Shannon. This book was so fun and showed us that not all pirates are bad.

For this book we did a few different things. Since Ray Ray is going to be getting back into school, we used this similar to a FIAR book and did different activities with it each day. We used these fun comprehension sheets to actually discuss the book and talk about the setting. I loved hearing Ray Ray’s opinions on it all, from what he thought it was going to be like before we read it, to how he understood it at the end of the story.

After our discussions, we did some activities that included making our own pirate patch and bandana. This pack also included a fun word find that Ray Ray is starting to fall in love with! After coloring these and cutting them out, I laminated them before adding the string to it…hello, kids and paper? Yeah, that would rip easy, but now they have something that will last a little longer!

Mommy had a doctor’s appointment during all of this, and Great Grandma got to watch the kiddos. She is big into arts and crafts and when she found out that we were learning about pirates, she had a day full of plans for the kids! They came home with paper swords and hats…and I don’t know how many coloring pages!! But they had fun and that works for me!

I have found so many other fun activities over on Pinterest that I am still working on with the kids, but we have been busy this month and have had all sorts of fun already!

Poppins Book Nook ~ Folktales In May

stonesoup

Welcome to the May post of Poppins Book Nook! This month we read folktales. Folktales are different from Fairy Tales. They tell not just a made up story but a story with a lesson in it. We picked Stone Soup by Marcia Brown as our main book, but have enjoyed many other folktales as well!

Have you ever read Stone Soup? This fun little folktale talks about sharing. Three soldiers coming home from war and stopping by a village to eat and rest. The villagers were not happy and did not want to share their goods with the soldiers, so they hid them all. The soldiers were wise and tricked the villagers with the stone soup they were making.

This was such a wonderful story of sharing and we had so much fun talking about the ways we could share and not be greedy. We than decided we needed to make some of our own stone soup. However, the hardest part of this whole thing, was finding just the right rock that would taste good! The kids had so much fun trying to find that stone. We made sure to wash it really well and added it to our soup pot. We than added our water and meat (we used some chicken). And the kids got to pick out the veggies they wanted to add. Letting this simmer until all was tender was tough. The kids wanted to make sure we didn't cook the stone too much! (Sorry…no pictures since the camera was out of battery power and I forgot to grab my phone camera)

This hands on approach to all of this helped the kids remember the story and the underlying lesson so well. They loved retelling the story as we made our soup. I have a Stone Soup Pinterest board with many other fun ideas to go with this book.

I am not the only one talking about the fun of folktales this month. Go check out these ladies and what they did with their kids!

Poppins Book Nook ~ Folk Tale Theme

Poppins-Book-Nook-main-image-2014-2015

This month for our Poppins Book Theme we are reading Folk Tales. Not Fairy Tales, Folk Tales. Do you know the difference? I didn’t until this month! A Fairy Tale is a short story that is usually fantasy, escaping to another reality and then returning to the normal world. They will include the fairy godmothers and wicked witches. Now when you read a Folk Tale, you are reading a story that has been passed down from generation to generation, usually orally. They are usually trying to teach the listeners something.

For our Folk Tale of the month, we are going to be reading Stone Soup. There are many different versions of this story (classic folk tale), but the same basic story line. We have one book that we rented from the library, and we are going to read another version on the tablet. We will then be having some fun with different activities that I am “pinning” on my Stone Soup Pinterest Board.

We will be playing around with other books too…I couldn’t just pick one! But this will be our main focus.

Don’t forget to hop on over to visit Jill at Enchanted Homeschooling Mom for the new lapbooking pieces for the month of May.

So, are you joining us? What will you be reading? I am curious to know!

Poppins Book Nook ~ Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Planes,Trains

The month of April had us reading about Planes, Trains and Automobiles. We found some good books and found our favorite in Richard Scarry's Cars & Trucks & Things That Go. I remember this book from when I was a kid. The best part was searching for Goldbug all over again! Little Miss and Ray Ray enjoyed listening to the story, but loved looking at the silly cars, Banana Car anyone? We got to talk about different vehicles and they were telling me what was a real car and a fake car 🙂

We had some big plans for activities this month…but guess what? Life happened and we went with the flow of things. We read the books, but didn't do the "fun" things I wanted…maybe later 🙂 Even though I didn't do any of those extra curricular activies with my kids, doesn't mean that you will have to miss out on any fun! Check out the giveaway for this month!

Make Your Own World ~ Poppins Book Nook ~ March 2014

Whereintheworld

Where in the world did your travels take you to this month? We traveled along with Toot and Puddle  while we learned about the world God made for us.

Toot and Puddle used to have a TV show that we loved to watch. However, I am unable to find that now, so now we fell in love with their books this month!

20140323_222507

Our main book was Toot and Puddle Top of the World by Holly Hobbie. This is a wonderful story about an adorable little pig, Puddle, who wonders where his friend Toot has disappeared to. After Toot has been gone for the whole day, Puddle goes in search of him. Once they have been reunited, the friends go to the top of the world together! Not only did we learn a few facts about the world (yes, they give real facts in a fun way), but we learned about friendship too!

Once we finished the book, it was time to get messy and make our own worlds!

Get Messy

We took a recipe to make a pinata and instead of adding the little frilly paper at the end, we pulled out the paint! Moe Man doesn't care for this kind of texture fun, so he was our photographer. Ray Ray and Little Miss had a blast the first day…but this process took a few days (you have to allow dry time between the layers). Once the layers were done and the paint came out…they were back!

Timetopaint

Ray Ray stuck to the "earthy" colors, but Little Miss went all "girly" with her world and painted it a nice combination of pinks and purples with her oranges and reds… We had so much fun this month with our books and this craft! I hope you give it a try!

The March Poppins Book Nook Theme

Is it really March? Is Poppins Book Nook really a year old? I have followed along with these ladies sine the beginning, and just now am I actually posting with them! This is such a fun way to make reading just a little bit more fun. A virtual book club where there is a theme instead of a certain book to read. So fun!

Poppins-Book-Nook-main-image-2014-2015

Do you want to join us? It is as simple as picking books that go with the theme and reading to your kids! Why not make it a little more fun and make some fun crafts or activities to go with the books? Find some fun worksheets or anything else along the sorts and add in the extra learning too? It really isn't all that hard! Are you a blogger? You can write about it and link up on the last Monday of the month too! Here are the themes for the year:

Poppins-Book-Nook-Themes-2014-2015

March is Where in the World and I thought about this one for a little bit before deciding what we were going to do. It is a little tough to find "just the right" book for all the different ages here (the 13 year old doesn't always like the little kid books and the little kids don't like his chapter books). I have decided that Moe Man can keep himself "busy" while I read to the little ones and hop in on the activities as he likes. My activities this month will be a lot of fun, I hope!

We have decided that we are going to be reading the Toot and Puddle Books this month. I miss this show, and really did like the story line behind it…it is one of the few that actually had a story line! We have a few now that we got from the library and like I said, I have some good ideas for some activities to go with them! Check back on March 31st to see what I have to share with you!

Now, I am not the only one who is doing this…don't forget to check out these other ladies and what they are doing this month!

Poppins Book Nook ~ Presidents

1620394_273533652796458_867251012_n (1)

Have you heard of Poppins Book Nook? It is an online book club for kids with a monthly theme to follow. We have been following along, but this month we are blogging about it too!

This month, the theme was Presidents. Do you know how many books there are about presidents? Trying to find just one or two…yeah, that doesn't work too well 🙂 We decided we wanted to learn more about Abraham Lincoln, so we read a couple of books about him.

PBNFeb14coll

My personal favorite was "…If You Grew Up With Abraham Lincoln" by Ann McGovern. The kids loved learning the differences from our time to Lincoln's time. We had fun learning that the house Lincoln lived in was a log cabin. We decided to build our own cabins out of popsicle sticks. Ray Ray and Little Miss decided that their choice of glue would be a pretty glitter glue…have to add some decorations some how right?

PBNFeb14

We also learned about the phrase "Honest Abe". The kids are now having fun calling each other "Honest Abe" when someone isn't telling the whole truth. This makes it really fun to listen to 🙂 And who could forget the use of lights…or lack of. We turned on our little electric fireplace and lit a candle to show the amount of light they would have in the dark. The kids weren't sure what to think, but did have fun just sitting for a moment.

Poppins Book Nook ~ November ~ Pets and a GIVEAWAY

petcollage

Ok, we have joined in with the Poppins Book Nook Club with the kids. What a fun time this was for us. Each month is a new theme of books to read and this month was pets. We read some books, did some activities (worksheets) about pets and played with our pets!

Our daily life with pets helped with this unit and we had and have fun everyday with our pets. The kids love to throw the ball for our Jolly dog and that silly red laser light keep both the dog and cat running around in circles! When it is just too cold to play outside, or too dark, the kids still love playing tug-of-war with Jolly…

While this is something we do every day, we also added in some extra books about pets this month. Little Miss loved this, since she is a cat and puppy lover! She pulled out all her books and we started. Books like the Usborne Little Book of Little Puppies and our Clifford collection were pulled off the shelves. Oh, and we can't forget the silly book of puppies made out of food 🙂

We even pulled out Harry the Dirty Dog from the library! The kids LOVED this one! A puppy who doesn't want a bath…they couldn't believe it! We found some fun worksheets over at Homeschool Share to go along with the book too. Little Miss loved anything that had a picture of a puppy on it for this one. She helped make the clean puppy dirty and than we played around with hiding the brush to clean Harry with. Hide and Seek is a fun game, but to make it harder with paper objects makes it even more fun!

We had such a fun time with this and can't wait to work on Greek Myths in January! I hope you will join us for that one! In the meantime, head on over and check out the other posts on pets and give them some love! Oh, and don't forget to enter in the giveaway for the National Geographic Animal Encyclopedia!
