Fischertechnik Profi Mechanic & Static 2 with Engineer – A Timberdoodle Review

My son is a builder, he will create and build things from nothing. When I was given the opportunity to review Fischertechnik Profi Mechanic & Static 2 with Engineer from Timberdoodle, I jumped at the chance. Oh, and I didn’t tell him it was coming until he opened the package!

Disclaimer:  I received a FREE copy of this product through Timberdoodle in exchange for my honest review.  I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

What Is It

This set includes 500 pieces and a guide to allow you to build up to 30 different models. Once you have mastered these, you can free build with your mind as your limit. The builds start with simple easy to make to really intense. They are meant to build upon each other and allow your child to build their knowledge one build at a time.

Within the 500 pieces, you will have a variety of pieces that help build many things. This also includes a working motor to allow you to make a build that actually operates. This was my son’s favorite part…building something that could perform a function.

How We Used It

The Fischertechnik Profi Mechanic & Static 2 with Engineer is part of Timberdoodle’s 7th Grade Curriculum Kit. Ray Ray is only in 6th grade this year, but with his building skills, I knew that this kit would be beneficial to him. Like I said in the beginning, I did not tell him this was coming to the house. The day it arrived, I opened the box and had it ready for him. I woke him up and when he saw the box he was in utter shock. This was not something he ever thought he would have in the house.

That first day, I allowed him to do as he wished with the set. I wanted it to be fun for him. Before I knew it, he had spent an entire day building, taking apart, and building again. When something didn’t work, I could see his brain working to figure out what was out of place and how to make it right. This took his normal block building to new heights and I could see him thinking in new ways.

After the “new” wore off, I decided we needed to just start from the beginning with the builds and see what we could learn. Well, we learned a lot. In fact, after learning some basics, Ray Ray went back and mastered some of the builds he was having difficulty with before. To me, there is no right or wrong way to use this as a learning opportunity. You can start with the biggest build and learn from your mistakes, or work your way up, learning as you go. Either way will work, you just have to know your child.

What We Thought of It

My son was so impressed by this set. After the surprise wore off, his appreciation of this product was shown through the numerous thanks that were given. This set was easy to use. The instructions on how to build the different models were easy to understand. When we had difficulties, it was an error of the user, and we were able to use those as teachable moments. Ray Ray was thrilled to add to his building collection, and both of us learned a lot about how engineering works with this set. While things seem simple, a simple mistake can cause major headaches. But a simple fix can reduce those headaches.

If your child loves building, this is a great set to help advance those builds. They will learn so much with the simple builds and you will see their mind working in new ways by adding new material to their supply. There are so many learning opportunities in this one fun building kit, I highly recommend it.

Greatest Dot-to-Dot Review and Giveaway!

This is a review post. I received this item in exchange for my honest review. Below you will find just that, my honest review.

We love to take a break from our everyday school from time to time. But, while we may not have lessons open in front of us, I always love to make sure the kids are learning in some way or another. We have had the chance to check out The Greatest Dot-to-Dot Mini Travel Newspaper Volumes 1-4 from Monkeying Around. These books were perfect for us!

What It Is

We received the first 4 books of the 8 in the set. These are small, 5.5 x 5.5 inches, and paperback. They are just the right size to be able to throw them in my purse for on the go fun. There are 40 pages in each of the little books and the style of the puzzles vary from page to page.

What do I mean by the style of the puzzles? Are they not dot-to-dots? Yes, they are, but there are actually different styles of dot-to-dots. There are the regular dot-to-dots, but there are also Odd/Even numbers, Stars, No Dots, and Sets of multiple lines.

Having these different variations to the puzzles keeps my kids, and myself on our toes as we go through the books.

How Did We Use It

There is no right or wrong way to use these books. We took them with us when we went to Dad’s doctor appointments. They are 1.5 hours away, so there was plenty of time to do some puzzles in the car. We have also used them in place of math lessons for the day. It is not often that we would do that, but there are some days when we just wanted something different to do.

Ray Ray has claimed one of the books as just his. He loves to do the dot-to-dots as he gets ready for bed. This is a great way for him to wind down from the electronic use during the day. I love knowing that he is having fun and doing something creative before bed.

Little Miss is at a younger age and had a few issues following the different styles. Once I explained them to her, she picked up on them quickly. She still likes the normal dot-to-dots but will be able to use the other styles when she has to.

What We Thought Of It

We are in love. The size of the books was perfect. There was no large number of dots, I don’t think they even went over 200 dots. This made it easier for younger kids. The actual size of the book was also nice. They were easy to carry around with me and didn’t take up a lot of space. This meant we were able to bring them with us on more occasions.

Guess what I have for you? I have a giveaway and a coupon code! Yes, you heard me right, a giveaway of the four books we reviewed, and a coupon code for 30% off anything in their store.

I have loved having this bookmark in my bible. Opening my bible every day and seeing this bookmark has made me slow down and think about this verse every day. Who doesn't want to think about trusting the LORD every day?

Home School Farm ~ A Review and GIVEAWAY

When you are the homeschool community, you find others who are like you. You find families, that may have different viewpoints, but the end goal is to provide a great education for our children. I was so happy to find that when meeting the author of Home School Farm, Amy Doeun from Crazy Boy Farm. I can't wait to tell you all about this book!

Home School Farm

Now, I call this a book, but Amy didn't just write a book, she wrote a year-round unit study of types. She takes us month by month on living on a farm and includes monthly and seasonal activities that will bring learning into real life.

After a brief introduction, Amy starts off with January and the excitement that the month holds. We continue through the months with some fun breaks for different topics throughout. Each month includes a little introduction and then it hops into the study for the month. Amy covers every subject even down to some fun activities to keep the kids interested in what they are they doing.

Home School Farm

There are 6 different mini topics that pop up through the year, these are; Budgets, Loss/Death, Abundance, Throwback Farming, Passion and Seasons. While these are not like the monthly sections that include Unit Studies with all the subjects broken down, they give you some great ideas for each topic and tell why they are important within the family and home. I have really enjoyed these breaks and each one applied to my life in some way or another.

Amy has taken the ho hum of farm life and shown what you can do for homeschooling and family learning by expanding on what you are already learning. She gives you ideas and resources so that you can expand on. I personally remember learning half of these lessons while working on my family farm. I have been super excited to start my children in on the learning and this book makes it possible for me to do so without a lot of extra planning!

Not only has Amy been generous enough to let me review this book, but she has told me that I get to give one of you a FREE copy! That is right, one of my lucky readers will get your own copy of this wonderful book! How do you get your chance? Fill in this form and see if you win. If you don't, you should still grab a copy of the book for your home right here!

The Legend of the Easter Robin ~ Review and GIVEAWAY

How do you talk with your kids about Easter? What stories do you tell to make the East story easy to understand for littler ears? We love to tell the truth about Easter, and a good book is always helpful. I was so excited to read The Legend of the Easter Robin and now love the early spring bird even more! Little Miss was just as excited to see a new book arrive in the mail. But every child has fallen for this book since it has been in the house!

The Legend of the Easter Robin Reveiw

About the book:

In the center of the nest lay one perfect egg, the color of a spring sky. The father robin sat on a branch nearby, guarding his family. Tressa spotted raccoon tracks below and a blue jay eyeing the nest. "Gran, how are we going to keep the egg safe?" "We'll have to leave that one to the Creator," Gran said. Robins have built a nest on the window ledge at Grandmother's house! Tressa is thrilledand concerned. What will happen to the sky-blue egg laid by the mother robin? As more eggs appear, Tressa witnesses the daily drama of the robins' nest and learns how God cares for all creatures. Besides watching the birds, there are Easter eggs to color. And there is a very special story to heara tale of long ago about one small bird with a very big heart. How did the robin get its red breast? Tressa is about to find out as Gran tells her the story of the Easter robin. Brought to life with colorful, tender illustrations, The Legend of the Easter Robin will captivate and teach your child about compassion and faith.

The Legend of the Easter Robin Review

This beautiful 32-page hardcover book is geared towards ages 4-8 years, but we have all enjoyed this book in the house from 1 to 38. The pictures are gorgeous. They are to the point, without being too graphic when you see Jesus, and vibrantly fully of color when talking about the robin family. When it was not being read, someone had this book in their hands to look at the pictures!

Tap My Trees ~ A School House Crew Review

Tap My Trees Review

Maple sugar, maple syrup, maple candies…oh my goodness! All these and more come from a simple tree. But you won't be able to just cut open the tree and get what you want from inside, you have to use the art of actually tapping the trees and collecting the maple sap from the tree. But that is not all. We have the chance to study all about this process and actually tap a tree with the Starter Kit with Aluminum Buckets from Tap My Trees! I am so excited to share with you more about this!

Tap My Trees Review

First of all, it is too early to actually tap a tree here in Minnesota, but we have already started the studying of the process so when the time is right, we will be ready to go! How do you start to study? Besides wasting away on Pinterest, you can start reading the included Maple Sugaring at Home book. This book has all you really need to know to get yourself some maple sugar!

First things first, you need to know what equipment you will be using during the maple sugar season. With the starter kit, you will get a lot of different items that may be new to you if you are new to the maple sugaring process. This is a great time to get yourself and your children to get to know the items in your kit. These items include 3 of each a spile, hook, bucket, and lid. With this kit you will also get the drill bit you need and some cheesecloth along with Maple Sugaring at Home.

Tap my Trees Review

After learning about your supplies, you are going to want to go and identify your maple tree. There are four different maple trees that are great to tap, the sugar, black, red and silver maples. If needed, you could also tap a birch or walnut, although their sugar content is not as great.

The first and easiest way to start identifying your tree, would be to look at the habitat. After making sure you are in the right area, we are in east central Minnesota, so we are in the right location, you want to start looking at the leaves. Maple trees have some of the most beautiful colors for leaves in the fall, and the shape of them will help you to determine also. You can also look at the bark, and twig/buds of the trees. But the one main way we knew our tree in the front yard was a maple, was the fruit. That fun "helicopter" fruit you throw into the air as a kid, or adult if you are me! This was a great way to know what we were looking at in the trees in our yard, and grandma's yard as well.

Tap My Trees Review

We had a lot of fun learning about the different kinds of maples. Did you know that they let their fruit go at different times during the year, the red maple in the spring and in the fall for a sugar maple? Even though they are all maples, each of these four have a different type of leaf. And those leaves usually end up being a different color. This was almost as much fun as the anticipation we have for actually tapping our trees.

After finding our maple, we looked at the next section of the book, "Tapping Trees". We learned about when we can start planning on tapping our maples, we have to wait until the end of February or even into March when our day time temperatures rise above freezing and our night time temperatures still fall below freezing. Once we are able to tap, we will have 4-6 weeks worth of sap flowing from our maples.

We are beyond excited to actually tap our trees, and with the quality of the products we received, I don't think we will have any problems. I am also very confident that I will not have an issue with any of the steps thanks to the detailed instructions within this manual. They even have drawings and pictures that show me what I need to know, and I work well with drawings and pictures!

Now after we collect our sap, we have further steps to take before we can have syrup. The supplies needed for that are not included, but are not that hard to obtain or purchase. While we have had fun learning about our trees, while we are excited about tapping our trees, the best part of this whole process is knowing that in the end we will have a sweet treat!

All in all, we are thrilled to have this product. The quality of the product is there, and it is not a simple two-page instruction flyer on how to use this, you have a full book, did I mention it had pictures?! This is something that I can see us using year and year again! I can't wait to update you on how we actually did on our tree tapping, keep an eye out!

While you wait, check out some of these other reviews!Tap My Trees Review

Men's Devotional Bible Giveaway

What We Thought

This was a very nice bible, very easy to hold and wonderful devotionals. The articles in the back had just the right topics and were written perfect for the man of the house to spend time with. Daddy has had a regular bible, but to add in the devotionals, right in the bible, it was nice to be able to study right there.

While the bible was set up wonderfully, I noticed that both Daddy and I had an issue with the gold print used for the titles within the bible. If you caught this in the right light, you would not be able to see it at all.

Daddy found the bible very easy to follow and navigate. He had no problems with the devotions or if he was “reading it right”. Because of this, he was not deterred from reading and spending the time needed in the bible. (He called it an entry level devotional bible that anyone read and understand.)

All in all this was a great bible with wonderful devotionals for the man in your life!

Speaking of which, would you like to win a free one? Get your entry in today!!

The Ultimate Homeschool Planner ~ A Schoolhouse Review

The Ultimate Homeschool Planner

A planner is like gold to a homeschool mom. They are the most valuable tool, after the bible, and it is hard to find the right one for you. While I have found the right one for me when I found The Ultimate Homeschool Planner (Yellow Cover) from Apologia Educational Ministries.

The Ultimate Homeschool Planner

What It Is

This is a gorgeous, spiral bound planner with a beautiful bendable plastic cover. There are pockets in the front and the back of this planner that will help you hold some of your loose pages. This planner has 48 weeks worth of planning pages available to use.

But…that is not all! There is so much more in this planner that make it my planner! Take a look at this table of contents! There is so much good stuff included in this ultimate planner!

The Ultimate Homeschool Planner

First of all, you need a user’s guide when you get a planner like this! You need to know how to reap the benefits of using something like this! Don’t let this user’s guide scare you. This is something that is going to help you understand how to utilize all the aspects of the planner. There is even pictures to show you what they are talking about!! The best part, Debra Bell also tells you how to use your planner with your child’s planner, whether they are using the planner for students or the one for the teens.

After learning how to use the planner, it is time to start planning! This is where I have fun! Now, in The Ultimate Homeschool Planner, you are first going to take a look at your whole year and pencil in all those vacations, holidays and breaks that you have planned. Don’t forget the field trips! This lets you see your year quickly. I was able to see when we were busy and when we could focus more on the tougher subjects.

The Ultimate Homeschool Planner

Debra includes 6 spaces for goal setting for your students. And not just the academic goals, but also their character goals. This is something that I have never actually sat down to do before. Since I agreed to review this planner, I knew that I was going to do everything like Debra said to do. Let me tell you…I have been missing out on the goals! I love looking at what I want each child to accomplish and see how close or far away that they are from that goal. They kids love looking at this as well and seeing what I want them to reach for!

Debra does not have anything dated. This works, because you can start your classes whenever you want this planner! I was able to start it in the last week of September and not waste half of the planner! The monthly are the simple blank monthly calendars that are great for filling your family’s priorities. This will help you figure out the homeschool for the month. Family first before homeschool! This is where you can look back to when you are working on your weekly schedule.

The Ultimate Homeschool Planner

Your weekly planning starts with sitting down and thinking about the week ahead. You are going to be looking at God’s faithfulness during your week while you keep track of your memorable moments and the evidence of God’s Grace in each week. (I love having a spot to write these things down).

When you sit down to plan out the week, you are going to look at what you want to work on for your Bible plan for the week and your fighter verse for the week. This was key for me. I loved finding some great examples to look at. This part for me was a mommy planner. While I have always focused on the kids learning their bible, mommy never took the time for mommy to learn her bible. Now the kids have their memory verse, and I have mine!

Once you have spent that time alone with the Lord and thought about your week, it is now time to plan for your kids! Just like the monthly pages, the weekly pages are blank. Here is where you have time to decide how to use the planner your way! Do you want to plan daily or weekly by subject? Do you want to work on unit study subjects together as a family? This is all up to you! There is no one size fits all when it comes to this!

We decided to plan daily by student, but I did have to start over that first week, when I wrote one thing while thinking another!

The Ultimate Homeschool Planner

Now, while that is the “main” part of the planner, it is not all of it! At the end of the planner, Debra has included some record spots, spots for you keep track of grades for your children. She also has the reading lists and field trip lists. There are also some teaching tips for you mom! While I have been homeschooling for a few years now, I still found new tips to help me be better for my kids and their growth!

As much as I don’t want to say it, there is even a high school planning guide for those of you with kids like Moe Man who are growing up too fast!! This is a great chart to have handy when planning out your years. This will let you see what needs to be done and by when.

What We Thought of This

Oh my! I was beyond excited to be able to open this planner up and use it right away! I was surprised by the user’s guide, but loved it! I kept looking back on it and using it to help me find the answers to the questions that I was coming up with. This planner has it all and all in one place! I really enjoyed trying all the different sections, sections that I would not specifically pick out if I were putting my own planner together.

Debra takes the important parts of a planner, puts them together and then adds in the word of the Lord to help support you along your journey. All the verses were the right fit for a homeschool family and the struggles we go through.

I found everything in this planner to be useful. I love the layout, the openness of it and the versatility for all the different homeschool styles. There is no one homeschool style, and Debra knows this, making a planner that fits us all!

I got to use the pretty yellow cover, but there are also orange and blue! Check out the other reviews and the pictures of those planners!

The Biggest Story ~ A Book Review and GIVEAWAY

The Biggest Story ~ A Book Review

“Once upon a time there lived a man and a woman. They were the happiest people on the planet.”The Biggest Story: How the Snake Crusher Brings us Back to the Garden This beautiful story was written by Kevin Deyoung and illustrated by Don Clark.

The Biggest Story ~ A Book Review

Once we started reading this book, the children did not want me to stop! What a wonderful bible story that was made very easy for the children to understand. Even when we weren’t reading this book, they were busy looking at the beautiful pictures!

The Biggest Story ~ A Book Review

The Biggest Story is a hardcover book with 132 pages. In The Biggest Story, Kevin DeYoung – a best-selling author and father of six – leads kids and parents alike on an exciting journey through the Bible, connecting the dots from the garden of Eden to Christ's death on the cross to the new heave and new earth.  With powerful illustrations by award-winning artist Don Clark, this imaginative retelling of the Bible's core message-how the Snake Crusher brings us back to the garden-will draw children into the biblical story, teaching them that God's promises are even bigger and better than we think.

The Biggest Story ~ A Book Review

We started reading this thinking that we would read a chapter a day. However, after chapter one, I was begged to read more. The kids even promised to do school and chores if I would read more! This leads me to believe that they enjoyed the story more than I thought they would!

The Biggest Story ~ A Book Review

I love the way the story of the bible has been laid out in an easy to read and understand way for the kids. This makes it fun for them, while opening up their minds to more questions. Once more questions have been asked, I can than go to the regular bible to help answer those.

The illustrations! I can’t get enough of these! I have personally sat for a little too long just flipping through and looking at the pictures. They are so colorful and abstract. They draw your eyes to them, and help the littles stay focused on something while mommy reads.

After reading this story, I have to say that I have learned somethings about the bible that I didn’t know before. It is quite fascinating to know that there are so many little details that can be pulled out of the bible to make a story like this that connects everything together to make perfect sense of the whole bible! I truly recommend this book be in every house and we love it!

You are all super lucky!! I have one copy that I get to giveaway!! Enter below for your chance to own your own copy of The Biggest Story!

The six songs on this album are: The Unmaking, Not To Us, Name, Love You More, Something Out of Me and Slow Down. Out of all of these, Slow Down is the song I have listened to the most! This is the song that had me smiling and crying! I feel that I can relate to this song the most as I watch all four kids grow, especially Baby Girl!!

The Unmaking

Nichole says this about her new album, "Before things in our lives can be resurrected and given new life, certain things must die.  Before beauty blooms in spring, roots must do the hard work under the hard frozen soil of winter.  Before you renovate and re-build, you tear down the parts of the structure that are weak or damaged or dangerous.  Before we make, we must unmake."

You can find Nichole on her website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Vevo. Make sure you let her hello from me!

The wonderful people at FlyBy Promotions (the ones who sent me this album to review) have agreed to let me give one of you lucky readers your very own copy of The Unmaking! Enter for your chance!!
