NotebookingPages.com ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Are you frustrated with your current curriculum? Are you looking for something fun that will help your kids learn at the same time? Instead of being frustrated and tied down, why not use some fun journaling, and why not make it pretty, or handsome, with the notebboking pages that are designed for them. The Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership at NotebookingPages.com has everything you need for just this!

Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership

What Is It

NotebookingPages.com is a website that has a notebooking page for almost everything, with new ones being added. The different topics are A-Z, Bible/Character, Famous People, Fine Arts, Geography, History, Holidays, Language Arts and Science/Nature. Oh, and there is even a section call Any Study. This is where you can pick and choose what you need for your homeschool if it isn't already listed in any of the other sections!

Debra, the owner of NotebookingPages.com, is a homeschool mom herself who wanted something better for her kids. When she wasn't able to find, she made it. And I am thankful that she did! This is our go to page for all things notebooking!

How We Used It

There is no right or wrong way to use this site, just so you know right now. You will decide how you want to use it, and that is what you will do. We have used this site for YEARS, and each time I find something new to use in a new and different way. Each one of my kids use the resources here in different ways and each one loves what they do.

Little Miss

Little Miss is busy learning her letters. I am able to hop on in and find the letter we are learning about in the A-Z section and we can use the pages to go with that letter. We love coloring the big letters and making the fun little books. We are able to draw a picture(s) of things that start with letter and practice writing words that start with that letter. She loves just having her own books to read to Baby Girl.

Ray Ray

Ray Ray is busy learning about birds and clouds this summer. We are finding out that the Charlotte Mason style homeschooing is best for him, and these notebooking pages help us to learn in a different way. I simply printed up some pages on the different birds in our area and let him find the information he wanted to learn about them. He is busy making his own bird book, and loves watching the birds with his book. We have also had fun simply staring at the clouds. The nature study section has a great collection of pages on clouds and we are able to write about what we see and find the difference in the clouds to the weather and how they both seem to change at the same time.

Moe Man

Moe Man is even busy with these pages. He has found a style he liked in the Any Study section and used this as a way to take notes for his government course. He takes one page per lesson and fills it full of what he is learning. There are some really neat little squares on some pages, and he is able to use those to draw what he has read about. This is a fun way of notetaking that you would not get from simple lined paper. I love seeing what he comes up with each day!

What We Thought

I love these pages. I love having that one site that has what I need to make a boring subject fun. That one site where I can replace the worksheets with fun sheets. I love that there are two different styles of lines with each unit and that I can pick and choose which one will work for us each day. The Lifetime Membership has been worth it to our family and we will continue to use these pages long into the future of our homeschooling days. If you have to pick one thing for your homeschool, pick this. This is essential in our homeschool and I think you will feel the same way about it in yours.

Notgrass Exploring Government ~ A Review

I really can't believe that Moe Man is in high school! I am not ready for this, but that doesn't matter. I don't get the chance to say no, slow down. I have to keep moving forward and planning his lessons out. Being in high school requires that Moe Man has to take certain courses. One of those required courses is a government course. So, which one do you choose? I picked Notgrass Exploring Government Curriculum Package from the Timberdoodle Eleventh Grade Curriculum Kit.

Exploring Government

What Is It

This Exploring Government curriculum is a set of books, Exploring Government and We Hold These Truths. Exploring Government has 75 lessons that are broken down into 15 Units. These lessons cover everything from the history of our government to Federal, State and Local Government. We Hold These Truths is collection of historic documents, essays and speeches from our American Government that go along with the lessons your child is learning. There is a Quiz and Exam Pack, but we did not receive that for this review, which is fine and didn't hinder our learning. Once these 75 lessons are completed, your child will have completed a half year credit in government, just what Moe Man needs to get his diploma in *gasp* 3 years!!

Exploring Government Review

How We Used It

While we did not have the quiz and exam pack to go with this, we did not have a problem finding enough things to do to feel confident in giving the half credit for using this curriculum. The beginning of every unit gives you a quick overview of what you will be learning. They also give activity ideas. These ideas are great ways to see what and how much your child is learning. I varied these activities from essays to presentations to even having Moe Man give a speech to mom and dad. This helped him pay attention to his reading and know that he would have to do something each week with what he was learning.

Each day Moe Man would read one lesson and the corresponding documents in We Hold These Truths. I had him work on some notebooking pages to take his notes and see what he thought was important from each reading. This helped him focus on his reading without the stress of a quiz each week (Moe Man hates quizzes)! I really enjoyed reading what he wrote each day and finding out his favorite parts of the history of our government.

Exploring Government Review

What We Thought

This is a very easy to read and understand government course. It works perfectly for the child who wants to learn at their own pace and it is easy enough to set the schedule and let your child go. There is no real reason for extra work from mom or dad and this is a bonus when you have a larger family. I loved the amount of information that is presented in this course and love knowing that Moe Man is getting a great study of our government without all the confusion that I had in school. I also love how the readings that are tied in from We Hold These Truths.

Moe Man found this fun to read. He liked the information and how it was presented to him from all the history and following the trail all the way to the present. He enjoyed the fact that he didn't have worksheets and just took notes each day. He wasn't a fan of some of the activities, but he doesn't like speaking so that was just a given. Overall, he enjoyed this course much more than he had anticipated.

Exploring Government Review

If your child is in need of a government credit for their high school years, I would highly recommend that you look at this and really consider it for your homeschool!

Dr Ransom’s Bestiary of Adorable Fallacies ~ Review and Giveaway

Logic, one of the hardest, yet most important parts of your child's education. How do you make it fun? How do you introduce fallacies without stressing out your child? What if you make them mythical beasts and have your child learn them the fun way?

Dr Ransoms Fallacies Giveaway

The Amazing Dr. Ransom's Bestiary of Adorable Fallacies is a great way to introduce logic without causing a lot of stress on your child. As a part of the 10th grade curriculum package at Timberdoodle, this book will be a great discussion piece as well as a great learning tool.

What Is It

This is Dr. Ransom's Field Guide for Clear Thinkers. A Field Guide? Yes, this is a guide to the reader to allow them to identify and exterminate 50 different fallacies. 50 fluffy and adorable fallacies will be introduced in the 300 pages of this soft cover book. There are two lesson plans in the back of the book that will allow you to cover all 50 of these fallacies in one semester (16 weeks) or a full year (32 weeks), including quizzes and tests available over at Cannon Press's website for free.

The Adorable Fallacy
The Adorable Fallacy

These 50 fallacies can be broken down into 4 Kingdoms; Fallacies of Distraction, Fallacies of Ambiguity, Fallacies of Form, and Millennial Fallacies. The reader, whether your child or yourself, will be introduced to these beasties, one per lesson. You will see a picture of the cuteness of the fallacy, with hopes of helping you remember them. After you have learned about the fallacy, you will see a picture of who they really are, and the not so cuteness of them.

The not so adorable fallacy
The not so adorable fallacy

At the end of each lesson, your child will be able to answer some discussion questions with you and write out their answers to 7 different exercises. These exercises will help your child identify the different fallacies in real life situations. When you add in the quizzes and tests, you take your knowledge of the fallacies to a whole new level, and mom (teacher) gets to see what you know!

How We Used It

We picked the one semester plan for our lesson plan with this book. Yes, it meant that Moe Man had to work a little faster, but I knew once he started reading the book that we would love it and have no issues. We followed this simple plan, and we learned the first 7 fallacies before we studied for the first quiz.

Moe Man would sit down each day, read his lesson and meet with me to go over the discussion questions. This would give me a chance to see what he had picked up on, and what needed some more discussing before he went on to the exercise questions. After the fun discussions, I sent Moe Man off to answer these simple 7 exercise questions. I would talk with him over the answers and make sure he was ready before we moved on to the next lesson the next day.

What We Thought

I loved this book. I couldn't wait to use it and loved reading it myself. The discussions and exercises were, in my mind well placed. They asked the right thing at the right time. The exercises were cute and I loved trying to figure out the fallacy with Moe Man and see if we could pick them out in real life situations.

An example of the exercises
An example of the exercises

Moe Man loved the stories. He loved how easy it was to read these stories, and how it did not feel like a lesson plan at all. He had a few troubles with the exercises. He wanted them to be questions instead of statements. With a little help from me, we were able to complete them without a problem though.

Overall, this is a book I will be keeping around for all my kids to use. These fallacies and the logic taught with them are, in my mind, a crucial part of our homeschool curriculum. This is information I want to arm my kids with and I am glad to have found it in such a fun and easy to understand format! If you are looking for a good logic curriculum for your child, I would recommend this one, and while you are at it, this is a great refresher for us parents and teachers out there!

Wordsmithy ~ A Book Review

How do you build confidence in a child who hates to write? One who will fit you all the way, plus some? You look for a writing help guide that has nothing to do with writing of course! What? Yes! A writing help guide that has nothing to do with writing, like Wordsmithy Hot Tips for the Writing Life by Douglas Wilson.

Wordsmithy Review

Moe Man does not write! He fights every time that I try to make him write. What is a homeschool mom to do? Well, you keep your eyes open and jump when you see something that offers what both mom and son want. A simple book to read that will give ideas on how to be a better writer without the actual writing.

Wordsmithy Review

What Is It

Wordsmithy is a 120-page book that your child will read. There are no writing assignments, yet your child will walk away with many new ideas for their writing assignments. There are 7 chapters, each containing about 7 mini lessons. Each lesson has takeaway points like "Love what you observe, love what you write and love those who read it." Chapter Four Part Seven. These takeaway points are just little tidbits of what your child needs to hear to know that their writing is better than they think it is. Wordsmithy is part of Timberdoodle's 11th Grade Complete Curriculum Set, but is recommended for ages 12 and up.

Wordsmithy Review

How We Used It

This was simple, assign a lesson to read and have your child read a little bit each day. When you notice that your child is interested in a particular topic, you have the recommended readings to assign. With Moe Man, I did not assign these, but was happy to see that when we re-read this book next year, we will be able to add more. We used this as a way to build confidence, to let Moe Man know writing is not just for a grade, but for those who will be reading it.

Wordsmithy Review

What We Thought

Moe Man loved this book. There were no assignments and he loved that. He was able to simply read this and take information away from it, which is his favorite kind of writing! Now that he is done, I have taken this book and plan to read it for me and my writing. That is what I like about it. This is a one size fits all kind of writing book. You're a newbie? No problem! Read this book and get some starter tips! You're an expert? Awesome, check out these tips to make your writing better! Whatever kind of writer you are, you have to read this book!

Guess what!!! I get to give away 2 copies of this wonderful book!! Do you want your own copy? Do you have a shipping address in the US? You need to enter this giveaway if you answered yes to both of these questions!!

Ultimate K-12 Homeschool Package – “I've tried a LOT of homeschool curriculum products over the years, and quite frankly this is the best value available in a secular curriculum package and it's easy on the parent. I'm homeschooling two kids and it's very easy to have them read the lesson and complete the assignments independently, then later the teacher's guides make it easy on me to review their work and correct it. The content is interesting and relates to the real world in a way that makes sense to the kids, especially the math problems. You also can't beat the price. All American History Vol 2 High School Test Packet

Sure, history is fun. And learning history can be fun. But as a high school student, there comes a time when you need to work on taking a test and showing what you have learned. When using All American History Vol 2, you have the option of getting the All American History Vol 2 High School Test Set.

Tests with All American History

The High School Test Set comes as a digital download. This download includes 8 tests and the answer keys to go with them. This means that your child will have one test for every 4 lessons. Each test has 4 sections. These sections are multiple choice, true/false, matching and mapwork. This gives just the right amount of variety while also helping the older kids practice for the ACT/SAT tests. These are 4 of the skills they will need to know.

The answer keys are simple to read and easy to use. Simply find the test you need to grade, and go ahead and match the numbers. I saved paper and ink by not printing mine and just looking at them online. This has worked wonders for me, yet if you need to print, it won't be much ink since they did not rewrite each of the questions.

High School Test Packet

We, well I, love this part of the program. I love being able to see what Moe Man has retained and what he has forgotten. This is that check point, what more do we need to study before moving further along? What needs review?

You are not required to jump right into the unit test. No way would they do that to you and your child. You have multiple ways to study for this test. At the end of every lesson you have your "Impacts" section. This is the review of the lesson. Yes, you learned a lot more during the lesson, but this is the part where you take the main points and study those. We spent a day reading over all the "Impacts" and quizzing each other. Yes, I let him quiz me. Moe Man does not do well on the test, but I notice if he can quiz me, he remembers more.

After spending a day with the "Impacts", we spent a day working on looking over all our lesson review worksheets. These worksheets helped us get an idea of what would be on the test for each lesson. We once again would quiz each other and see how well we knew the information at hand. It was really nice to see how well Moe Man did on this. I think he might have liked this way of studying for a test!

High School Test Packet All American History

At this point I would ask Moe Man if he felt comfortable with what he knew, or if he wanted more time to study. This leaves the ball in his court and he has to make some decisions about his schooling without me. If he was ready, we would go ahead with the test. If not, we would do another day of mixed reviewing, depending on where he felt he needed more. Like I said, I want to see him take charge, and this is where he has that chance.

The tests are rather simple once you have gone over the reviews. It is nice to get a comprehensive review every 4 lessons. It is nice to have the review and remember what you have learned about. This makes it easy to go on and continue learning without forgetting what you have already learned.

Every 8 lessons you get to the end of your unit. There is no unit test, but there is a unit review. This review covers all the main people and places where the main events took place. Once again this is a great way to study and remember what you have learned. This review is simple and is easy to go over. I let Moe Man use his book on this. Me telling him this was not a test made this a lot more fun for him!

Unit Review All American History Vol 2

We are loving every minute of our All American History Vol 2. We have learned some new things and look forward to a lot more learning. Next time I can't wait to tell you more about how we study with games. Yes, even with just one student learning this subject, you can still play games!

Do you like to use tests in your studies? Do you like to use weekly, monthly or bimonthly tests best?

Civil War Study with All American History

We have been keeping busy with our history review these last two weeks. Remember I told you we were starting All American History  with Moe Man? Well,  we   have had so much fun that I had to share an update with you!

All American History

All American History Vol 2 is a wonderful program that we are using for our American History Credit for High School this year. We have been looking for something that would be a great fit for both mom and kid, and we have found it! Moe Man loves his history, and most of the programs I looked at just didn't quite seem to have him interacting as much as I wanted to be. Even though he is working on high school credit, I want him having fun while he is doing it!

These last two weeks we have continued our studies of the Civil War. We learned even more about the Confederate and the Union states. I love the fact that the worksheets use different elements of learning. While learning about the different sides of this war, we are able to color our map and have that visual of who is going again who. Not only does this help us see where the war is happening, but Moe Man can learn more about where the states are located. I get to get an idea of where he is at in preparation for our Geography studies in the future.

All American History Vol 2

So, here we are. We are not just filling the blanks, or picking a letter. We are filling out our maps. Seeing where exactly everything is happening. But that is not all. With our studies in All American History Vol 2, we are given different topics to dig further into during each lesson. We can pick one, two, three or all four. Each one of these Further Study questions makes Moe Man leave the textbook and look somewhere else for the answer. We have some good reference books at home and in our library, but he is also learning about the joys of Google, and reliable online sources. This puts the learning in his hands and he is able to have fun with this.

Further Study

When we started AAH2, we had not yet memorized the presidents up to this point in history. I found this idea in our Project Possibilities, and have had fun watching, and learning with, Moe Man. As we learn a new president we are able to add his picture to the wall.

Project Possibilites

Speaking of the wall, our timeline has grown! We wanted to do a wall timeline, but didn't know where to put it. We have our schoolroom that has been doubling as dad's office, but we are running out of room. Moe Man might love history, but not enough to have a timeline in his room! So, we are taking our timeline to a notebook. This "traveling timeline" has been a great way to see our way through history. I have a nice list of people, places and events in my teacher's guide for each unit. This makes it easy for me to know who to look for and where abouts they should go when we put them "on the line".

Timelines

And I can't leave this week without telling you more about my teacher's guide. This book has everything I need to feel confident enough to teach this course. Not only do I have the resources for what to learn, I have weekly checklists. This simple little checklist shows me what we can do for each lesson. With this I know what to make sure is done and what to add when I plan out my week. This is awesome when you are homeschooling one, two, three or three and a half kids! Not only do I have an awesome set up for a plan, but I have some really simple answer keys! Now you can have answer keys, or you can have an answer key that is a mini picture of the actual worksheet with the answers written in for you. This is so much easier than trying to follow a number or a follow a line. I actually love correcting these worksheets due to the lack of confusion!

Teachers guide AAH2

Now, before I write a book…haha, can you tell that I love this curriculum? I have to go and help Moe Man with his biography of our 16th president. Who knows who that is?? I will be back to tell you more. Ask me any questions and I will find an awesome answer for you!

God Bless!!

Amanda

All American History Introduction

All American History Introduction

American History, a subject that is very important to our family as a homeschooling family. A subject that should be fun and important in all American households! But what kind of program is a good fit? We have tried many different ones that Moe Man has followed along with, but then we found a hands on program that Moe Man loves! Let me introduce you to All American History Vol 2 from Bright Ideas Press.

All American History Introduction

All American History (AAH) is a complete history program for grades 6-12. How is that possible? Buy one program and use it for numerous different grade levels? Well, that is because, the older your child gets, the more YOU as their teacher will add to their learning. That is the first thing I noticed when looking into this program. I can pick and choose what Moe Man will be learning. I can take it easy one week and add extra another, all while keeping the main focus the same.

Now there again, if I really wanted to, I could add Ray Ray and Little Miss into the mix of this subject, and still be able to make it work for their levels! The teacher's guide gives me all the ideas to make that happen along with the All American History Jr guide that has all the extras put together to go with the Student Reader. That is something we will be thinking about in the future, but right now they are doing Mystery of History 1. Yes, I have 3 kids doing two different history eras. It gets difficult at times, but AAH makes it possible for Moe Man to work individually as needed.

All American History Introduction

To make the most of using AAH for your high schooler, I would recommend the Teacher's Guide, Student Reader, Student Activity Book, the All American History High School Test Packet. We are also using the Historical Timeline Figures. These supplies will get you a full 32 weekly lessons.

All American History Introduction

I was so excited when the box came in the mail…I might have been stalking the mail lady for the week of this delivery! As a curriculum addict, finding something that you like AND your child likes, well…that is the best thing in the world. I was happy to see Moe Man just as interested in the books as I was. He is usually one to shrug off a new book or curriculum, but this time he actually stopped and started looking through the books.

All American History Introduction

Instead of waiting for the new week to begin so we could start our new history program, Moe Man wanted to start right away. This is something that shocked me. Moe Man doesn't like change, but after looking at the books, he was ready for a change mid-week. After reading through the teacher's guide over night, I was confident to start the lessons the next day. The teacher's guide has everything listed in an easy to read and understand way. Right away I was book marking the different pages and loving everything I was seeing!

We are two weeks into our new history curriculum, and we are in love with this program. I have been adding the further study questions in and having Moe Man read from the Book Lists that are provided with the teacher's guide. The further study questions take the student further into the subject and have them think in different ways. These questions work for having Moe Man actually work on his writing (even though he doesn't like this) and see what he has taken in.

All American History Introduction

The book lists are broken down by Unit first and are broken down one more time by "grade". You can have your child pick from the list with their grade level, or you can assign which book to have them read. You can do one, or more than one. We are using our books for both history and language lessons. I let Moe Man pick one from his grade level and we pick one from a lower level that we read aloud together. This works for us. The nice thing is, you can do what works for you and still get a great education from this curriculum.

I can't wait to tell you more about this wonderful program, but for now I need to quickly plan out our next week of school! I will come back in a few days and tell you more, I will see you than!

God Bless and Keep You!!

Amanda

Our Weekly Plans for November 16-20, 2015

What are we doing this week? Well a lot, and not much all at the same time! Here are my plans, but they can change quite quickly!

RayRay

This week we are readjusting our schedule, finding the things that work for us. Ray Ray is making the switch over to a more Charlotte Mason focused learning. I have found that this is the best way he learns. Last year we didn’t “do” much, yet he taught himself to read, and does all his addition and subtraction in his head. I feel that if we keep his lessons short and sweet and have fun, we will excel beyond our wildest dreams. I am already being yelled at because the Pinocchio is too different from the original book we are reading out loud.

To make this happen, I have him working from www.allinonehomeschool.com and www.amblesideonline.com With these two programs, I am not spending much of anything (they are both free resources), and we are having fun again! That is all that matters, my kids having fun while learning!

LittleMiss

Little Miss is going to be working with www.allinonehomeschool.com for her letter learning. I am also going to be adding in some sight words from Sightwords.com and let her feel happy knowing that she is starting to read. Being in preschool should be fun and games, so I am going to make that fun and games for her.

MoeMan

Moe Man…my high schooler. He has been trying to go back to the “fun” years instead of these serious years. This week I am going to be working on letting him be more independent. He likes to have me “help” him, but I don’t want him relying on me. To help him along I will be writing all his assignments down for the week. He will have the option to ask me for help during a certain amount of time each day, otherwise, he needs to get it done, with a passing grade if he wants to go out and do his own thing later. I will let you know how that goes!

Adding to all of this, we are bringing back our morning time. We have had so much time away from this, I feel icky. I am happy to have it all back and running. I got our circle/morning time printables from www.onlypassionatecuriosity.com Heather has something for everyone over there!

What are your plans for the week? Have any field trips or fun adventures in store? I would love to hear from you!

IEW Phonetic Zoo Spelling ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

IEW Phonetic Zoo Review

When you reach high school, are you done with spelling lessons? And how would you take a spelling class if you had too? Moe Man loves spelling and he loves the independence of using the Institute for Excellence Writing and the Phonetic Zoo Spelling Level C (Starter Set).

IEW Phonetic Zoo Review

What It Is

This is a full spelling program for grades 6-12, depending on skills. It is best to take the placement test to ensure your child is at the right level when it comes to this. Included in the starter pack is 6 audio CDs with the option to also download the MP3 version, lesson cards, personal spelling cards, Zoo cards, a downloadable teacher’s guide in PDF format and a Spelling and the Brain video seminar that is streaming with your purchase.

This is a phonetics based spelling program that uses Mrs. Anna Ingham’s Blended Sound-Sight Program of Learning. This is a wonderful multi-sensory approach to learning that really has helped Moe Man.

There is no lesson plan that goes along with this. Your child listens to the new rule while you talk about it together. You learn the new jingle together and your child while be able to use that while working on their words. While there are no lesson plans, no weekly have to do this, you do have lessons. And you work on this lesson until your child knows those words.

How We Used This

I started out by reading through the teacher’s guide and watching the Spelling and the Brain video. This video was a great insight into using the program itself. While I got what I needed from the teacher’s guide, I loved the video and the extra little hints on how this works and WHY.

We started our first lesson on a Monday. You don’t have to do a Monday, but we did. We went over the flashcard and the rule for that lesson. I gave Moe Man his Zoo Card…which he laughed at the first time, but kind of fell in love with, and told him to number his page for his first test. He was shocked, he didn’t have the list of words to study, there were no word finds, or fun games to play. And then I told him to get his head phones out. This confused him.

The Phonetic Zoo has your child using headphones while they listen to the words. The headphones bring the sound of the words closer to the brain…and blocks out the extra noise of the little brother and sisters. When Moe Man was numbering his page, he skipped a line between each number, this worked for when it came to correcting the words after.

IEW Review

Moe Man loves IEW and their use of pens over pencils. This helps with making them slow down because they can’t erase with a pen. This also makes him feel more responsible for what he is doing.

After listening to the word list and attempting to spell them correctly, Moe Man would listen to the corrections. This took a little getting used to for him to follow along. He had to learn how to pause the disk instead of asking me to stop, or me knowing when he needed me to stop. I noticed this changing the more he has used it. He is becoming more confident in himself and is paying better attention when it comes to this point.

Now, Moe Man will continue with each lesson until he gets 100% twice in a row! This is also different from the “normal” spelling tests. But this way, I know that he knows the rule and has had time to work on the words. And this is why your 47 lessons will last a different amount for each child.

What We Thought Of This

I personally loved this program. It was a great way for Moe Man to work on his spelling, and work in a way that stuck with him. There is no frills about it, you are working on learning the rules of spelling, not a game.

Moe Man loved the words. He has always loved spelling, and he loved this new approach to spelling. He would get frustrated when he had one wrong, but knew that he was close and was happy to share that.

There was nothing to complain about. Moe Man didn’t argue when he was told to do this and truly enjoyed it. I didn’t have hours of prep to make it work and yet seen results that made a mom proud!

While Level C is the highest level, there are lower ones that you need to check out. Head on over and see these other reviews!!
