NotebookingPages.com ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Are you frustrated with your current curriculum? Are you looking for something fun that will help your kids learn at the same time? Instead of being frustrated and tied down, why not use some fun journaling, and why not make it pretty, or handsome, with the notebboking pages that are designed for them. The Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership at NotebookingPages.com has everything you need for just this!

Notebooking Pages LIFETIME Membership

What Is It

NotebookingPages.com is a website that has a notebooking page for almost everything, with new ones being added. The different topics are A-Z, Bible/Character, Famous People, Fine Arts, Geography, History, Holidays, Language Arts and Science/Nature. Oh, and there is even a section call Any Study. This is where you can pick and choose what you need for your homeschool if it isn't already listed in any of the other sections!

Debra, the owner of NotebookingPages.com, is a homeschool mom herself who wanted something better for her kids. When she wasn't able to find, she made it. And I am thankful that she did! This is our go to page for all things notebooking!

How We Used It

There is no right or wrong way to use this site, just so you know right now. You will decide how you want to use it, and that is what you will do. We have used this site for YEARS, and each time I find something new to use in a new and different way. Each one of my kids use the resources here in different ways and each one loves what they do.

Little Miss

Little Miss is busy learning her letters. I am able to hop on in and find the letter we are learning about in the A-Z section and we can use the pages to go with that letter. We love coloring the big letters and making the fun little books. We are able to draw a picture(s) of things that start with letter and practice writing words that start with that letter. She loves just having her own books to read to Baby Girl.

Ray Ray

Ray Ray is busy learning about birds and clouds this summer. We are finding out that the Charlotte Mason style homeschooing is best for him, and these notebooking pages help us to learn in a different way. I simply printed up some pages on the different birds in our area and let him find the information he wanted to learn about them. He is busy making his own bird book, and loves watching the birds with his book. We have also had fun simply staring at the clouds. The nature study section has a great collection of pages on clouds and we are able to write about what we see and find the difference in the clouds to the weather and how they both seem to change at the same time.

Moe Man

Moe Man is even busy with these pages. He has found a style he liked in the Any Study section and used this as a way to take notes for his government course. He takes one page per lesson and fills it full of what he is learning. There are some really neat little squares on some pages, and he is able to use those to draw what he has read about. This is a fun way of notetaking that you would not get from simple lined paper. I love seeing what he comes up with each day!

What We Thought

I love these pages. I love having that one site that has what I need to make a boring subject fun. That one site where I can replace the worksheets with fun sheets. I love that there are two different styles of lines with each unit and that I can pick and choose which one will work for us each day. The Lifetime Membership has been worth it to our family and we will continue to use these pages long into the future of our homeschooling days. If you have to pick one thing for your homeschool, pick this. This is essential in our homeschool and I think you will feel the same way about it in yours.

Introductory Science from Science Shepherd ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Oh Science, how I dread thee, yet all my kids love thee. So now what? What is a homeschooling mom to do? Well, if you are me you would look to Science Shepherd and their Introductory Science Level A.

Science Shepard Review

What Is Included?

For this review, we received the Level A Introductory Science Student Book and the corresponding teacher's guide along with one year access to the online video lessons. There are some simple experiments and activities included with this, but you won't use anything strange or hard to find.

How Does This Work?

I am so glad that you asked!! I love the simplicity of this curriculum. Ray Ray simply watches a short video lesson, they range from 2-8 minutes long, and answers some questions in his work book. These questions are not hard to answer, yet show whether or not the child was paying attention to the video.

Science Shepard

When they are done with the lesson, you can look over their work with your answer key. At the beginning of Level A (great for ages 6-8), I haven't had the need to use mine much, but as you move farther along, it will be nice to have the backup in case you are unsure.

Science Shepard

How Did We Use This?

This was such a fun and simple way for Ray Ray to learn about Science with a Biblical Perspective. The weeks are split up into 5 days, so we would simply follow along. There was no hard lesson planning for me. Simply write down which week we were on and go. We used this daily for the whole week. Ray Ray would find the week and day on the website, watch the video and do the worksheet. On the days when there was more, he would follow up with the video activity.

Science Shepard Video Act

The lessons and worksheets didn't take him more than 20 minutes a day, perfect for his attention span as a 7-year-old boy! When the video activities were present, it may take 25-30 minutes, but this still was not bad since it was an activity and not a lesson or worksheet.

Science Shepard

What Did We Think?

LOVE, it the first word I can think of! Ray Ray is getting his fill of biblical science, and I don't have to stress about it one bit! I don't have to be confused by the program and I don't have to worry about how to schedule this into our week. I just simply send him to the computer each day, keep my ears on what is being said. I love that a simple glance at the next week will tell me if I need to gather any extra supplies for the following week.

What Does Ray Ray Think?

"I like it, and the video activities that are included. It starts off easy, and is getting harder as I go, which means I am learning more! There is nothing I don't like about it."

Science Shepard

Our Final Thoughts

This is a curriculum we will continue to use in our homeschool day. The video lessons helps Ray Ray be independent, yet I am in the loop as to what he is learning and can step in when I need to. Ray Ray loves being in control and I have had to stop him from doing too many lessons at once! But in the end it is fun and educational, as well as easy to use!

Science Shepherd has more than just this one course available. Want to see more? Check out these other reviews with me and find a course that works for you!!

Memoria Press The Book of Astronomy ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Stars, constellations and the motion of the earth. The simple and fun things of science. Why not learn about the skies above us and learn about it in an easy way? Moe Man has been doing just that with Memoria Press and the Book of Astronomy Set.

MemoriaPressBookAstronomy

This two book set includes the student text and teacher's guide. I also found the weekly lesson plan available on the website. This set is geared towards 3-5th grades, but as a freshman Moe Man still loved this program and I even fell in love with it myself.

The main goals of this program is to teach your child the 15 brightest stars, the 12 Zodiac constellations and the 8 planets. These should be able to recited from memorization by the end of the program. Your child will also learn about the motions of the earth and how each constellation lies in the sky during the different seasons.

MemoriaPressBookAstronomy

When you follow the Lesson plan guide for this program, you will be able to complete this whole program in about 30 weeks. We started off following this plan, but as with any homeschool subject, we have slowed a little to take the time that is needed for Moe Man to work on the memorization. He has surprised me with his love and interest, but I sorta knew he would take to this (long story, different time, different post). I was happy to know that I was right in knowing that he would love this.

Since this is geared towards the younger ages, I was able to let Moe Man do a lot of this on his own. I did take the time to go over what he was learning at least once a week, but for the most part, he was able to understand this and work on it at his own pace.

The teacher's guide shows you what the child sees, only you get to see the answers as well. This is nice for when you want to do a quick check on what they have done. Just open, compare and move on. The assignments are simple, yet effective. And working on the memorization each week builds confidence. No worries about memorizing everything at once, take it in sections one week at a time and build on what you know.

BookofAstronomy

The student book has all your child needs to learn about the constellations. Yes, you could add more, but this book has all they need to complete the course and know what they are talking about. They learn about the new lesson, work on their memorization and proceed to draw out the constellations. They start with the basic stars, what they would see if they looked out of their window or telescope and they connect the dots. I feel this helps to show the constellations for when they DO look out the window or telescope. They are able to visually connect the dots after doing it on paper.

Moe Man loved this program, I loved this program. We love using this program. We have been using this program every day during the week, and I may or may not have seen Moe Man staring up at the stars on the weekends when we love to spend time outside. This means that he is taking what he is learning and bringing it into his everyday life.

BookAstronomy

We really loved this program and how fun it was to use. The lesson plans helped me plan things out, but they were not needed in completing the program. Moe Man loved this program. He loved how fun it was to do something other than writing assignments. He loved that he was completing the constellations and not just writing about them.

Memoria Press has many other fun learning programs. Head on over with me to read some of those reviews!

Tap My Trees ~ A School House Crew Review

Tap My Trees Review

Maple sugar, maple syrup, maple candies…oh my goodness! All these and more come from a simple tree. But you won't be able to just cut open the tree and get what you want from inside, you have to use the art of actually tapping the trees and collecting the maple sap from the tree. But that is not all. We have the chance to study all about this process and actually tap a tree with the Starter Kit with Aluminum Buckets from Tap My Trees! I am so excited to share with you more about this!

Tap My Trees Review

First of all, it is too early to actually tap a tree here in Minnesota, but we have already started the studying of the process so when the time is right, we will be ready to go! How do you start to study? Besides wasting away on Pinterest, you can start reading the included Maple Sugaring at Home book. This book has all you really need to know to get yourself some maple sugar!

First things first, you need to know what equipment you will be using during the maple sugar season. With the starter kit, you will get a lot of different items that may be new to you if you are new to the maple sugaring process. This is a great time to get yourself and your children to get to know the items in your kit. These items include 3 of each a spile, hook, bucket, and lid. With this kit you will also get the drill bit you need and some cheesecloth along with Maple Sugaring at Home.

Tap my Trees Review

After learning about your supplies, you are going to want to go and identify your maple tree. There are four different maple trees that are great to tap, the sugar, black, red and silver maples. If needed, you could also tap a birch or walnut, although their sugar content is not as great.

The first and easiest way to start identifying your tree, would be to look at the habitat. After making sure you are in the right area, we are in east central Minnesota, so we are in the right location, you want to start looking at the leaves. Maple trees have some of the most beautiful colors for leaves in the fall, and the shape of them will help you to determine also. You can also look at the bark, and twig/buds of the trees. But the one main way we knew our tree in the front yard was a maple, was the fruit. That fun "helicopter" fruit you throw into the air as a kid, or adult if you are me! This was a great way to know what we were looking at in the trees in our yard, and grandma's yard as well.

Tap My Trees Review

We had a lot of fun learning about the different kinds of maples. Did you know that they let their fruit go at different times during the year, the red maple in the spring and in the fall for a sugar maple? Even though they are all maples, each of these four have a different type of leaf. And those leaves usually end up being a different color. This was almost as much fun as the anticipation we have for actually tapping our trees.

After finding our maple, we looked at the next section of the book, "Tapping Trees". We learned about when we can start planning on tapping our maples, we have to wait until the end of February or even into March when our day time temperatures rise above freezing and our night time temperatures still fall below freezing. Once we are able to tap, we will have 4-6 weeks worth of sap flowing from our maples.

We are beyond excited to actually tap our trees, and with the quality of the products we received, I don't think we will have any problems. I am also very confident that I will not have an issue with any of the steps thanks to the detailed instructions within this manual. They even have drawings and pictures that show me what I need to know, and I work well with drawings and pictures!

Now after we collect our sap, we have further steps to take before we can have syrup. The supplies needed for that are not included, but are not that hard to obtain or purchase. While we have had fun learning about our trees, while we are excited about tapping our trees, the best part of this whole process is knowing that in the end we will have a sweet treat!

All in all, we are thrilled to have this product. The quality of the product is there, and it is not a simple two-page instruction flyer on how to use this, you have a full book, did I mention it had pictures?! This is something that I can see us using year and year again! I can't wait to update you on how we actually did on our tree tapping, keep an eye out!

While you wait, check out some of these other reviews!Tap My Trees Review

Eat Your Science Homework ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Eat Your Science Homework

Science, this is not a fun subject for me. But when I am told to Eat Your Science Homework, I begin to think that Ann McCallum Books might be losing her mind! After trying this “science” out, I have a full tummy, happy kids and a new way to look at science!

Eat Your Science Homework

What it is

With the 47 pages of this paperback book, you will find science facts, yummy recipes and new memories! Ann starts off with a couple of safety of tips to make the learning even more fun, and safe! As soon as you know how to be safe, you are able to go and have fun…er, I mean learn!

Following that, you have 6 learning and eating experiments to work on, each with a different science focus. Each “lesson” if you want to call them that, start off with some learning about what you are about to do. There are vocabulary words that you get to learn, and you can find the definition in the back if there is one that you may not understand.

Once you have learned about the science fact that you need to know, you get to eat…well, first you need to experiment, then you can eat! This is the fun part, with step by step instructions and cartoon pictures, this is geared to even the youngest in the house!

Eat Your Science Homework

How We Used It

Oh, if my kids were in control, we would have spent a whole day doing science as soon as we got the book! They were loving the ideas, and wanted to do everything! We took it one thing at a time though…for mom’s sanity!

Mommy decided we wanted to learn about Density. Learning about Density Dressing and Veggie Sticks. It was fun to hear Moe Man do our reading out loud, and being able to quickly review what we were about to work on learning. After that, we were ready for fun!

Everyone took turns talking about they thought would happen as mom would add a new ingredient to the cup. (Note to self: do not use green food coloring when your other colors are yellow and brown!) The kids had fun talking about the density of items and how it was “cool” to see the layers.

Now came the real science part…they had to eat what they made! This was not a well-accepted idea by any of the kids, but once they had the courage, they wouldn’t stop eating their science homework!! We were able to eat and talk about what we learned after the lesson. Ann gave other ideas of liquids to test the density of at the end of the lesson, and the kids were having fun making their hypothesis and trying it out. Who would have thought that density would be fun…and tasty!

Eat Your Science Homework

What We Thought

There is no mistaking that the kids loved this book! We may have only talked about one, mommy forgot the camera on the others…oops, but we had fun with atomic popcorn balls and Loop, Whorl and Arch cookies…although those were a lot less scary to try than the density dressing!

The kids loved the short lessons, and the fun pictures within the book. The recipes were easy enough and made for a fun time for everyone…heck, even clean-up was easy! (My biggest fear of science experiments!) Mommy loved that the lessons were fun and educational, I didn’t have to force them to learn! The book is also made so that it lays open when you are busy working…no need to have items sitting on it and the fear of losing your spot!

All in all, we loved the book, the experiments and the fun! This was a fun way to add hands on (and in the mouth) to the lessons! It is not every day that you have that kind of a chance!

Ann McCallum has other books available, just head on over and check out what the other families thought of them!

Super Teacher Worksheets ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

What do you do when your child does not understand something? What if you need something fun to practice what you are learning? Where do you go for that? I have fallen in love with the Individual Membership over at Super Teacher Worksheets for just these types of problems!

Super Teacher Worksheets

What It Is

This is a wonderful website that has worksheets and games for preschoolers and beyond. Most of the “grades” are up to the 5th grade, but I loved the practice that these were able to give to Moe Man in the 9th grade when it comes to some subjects!

This is not a full curriculum in any way, but can be used to supplement any curriculum that you may have. All major subjects are covered and within those subjects, all major categories are there. You are even able to make your own extra practice sheets when needed.

How We Used This

I love supplementing when I want my kids to practice something a little more. I don’t like looking all over and wasting my time trying to find just the right thing. That is where Super Teacher Worksheets came into play. I would look at our lesson plan, and look on the menu, find the matching worksheets, pick the one, or two, that I wanted and away we went.

Ray Ray has been asking me for some time to have a color by number like Little Miss had, when I found the scarecrow addition color by number, I was thrilled! Not only did he get what he wanted, mommy got what she wanted by having him practice his addition skills.

Super Teacher Worksheets

When Moe Man forgot about algebraic expressions (really who remembers that stuff anyway!), I was able to find some simple worksheets that refreshed his memory in a fun, non-threatening way. When his double digit multiplication was missing a step, I was able to find fun, colorful worksheets to help him practice. (These simple things are a MUST for him and his learning).

Super Teacher Worksheets

And when Little Miss wanted to be like her brothers, I was able to add some letter worksheets into her daily work! There is truly something for everyone here!

With all the supplementing, I was able to find something for everyone to do in different subjects, so we are using this website daily. Each worksheet is at least two pages, with the answers included. When printing, I would only print the student pages to help save on paper and ink. I could always go back and check the answers on the computer. The only time this did not work was when it was a build your own worksheet. That is where the File Cabinet comes in, just remember to save your worksheet to the file cabinet before you generate it…I forgot this step the first time!

What Did We Think

I love this website! While I was given an individual membership for this review, I have my own account that I set up and purchased before this review. I plan to continue my membership after this review as well. This is a site that I have found very useful in our homeschooling. It is a site that I do use on a daily basis. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

If you need more opinions, check out these other reviews from The Crew! If you do, or have had this membership, what is your favorite feature of it?

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Is it really time to start planning the new school year? I feel like summer has just started! This week Moe Man is doing his fun testing, so we have limited school. What better time to plan for the new year?

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Moe Man is going to be in 9th grade! I am not ready for this, but I have no choice. Being in 9th grade, a freshman, means that I have to get more serious along with him. Being more serious for me means tracking more and grading more. No more pass or fail options. How will I do this? I am going to use Homeschool Planet to help me out. Remember my review?

That was the simple part. But now I have to actually teach him something! To make sure I am covering everything I need to cover I have printed up some of the High School forms from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus. She has everything you need for school planners, and they are FREE!

Math

Math this year is going to be Unlock Math. You will hear more about that in the near future. We are doing the Pre-Algebra. This is the math level that Moe Man is at right now. He is loving this online way of learning the math and I love that he is learning!

English

English this year is going to be a combination of a few different things. For writing we are going to continue to use our IEW Student Writing Intensive Level B. This was the first time that Moe Man loved to write, so we are going to keep using it!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

We are adding in Sharon Watson’s Illuminating Literature: When Worlds Collide for our literature study. I love the book list with this program and I can’t wait to share our review with you!

We are also continuing our study of words by using Dynamic Literacy. I loved this program. I loved how simple yet effective the daily lessons were and I could see things clicking in Moe Man’s brain…this is good!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Science

This year for science we are doing Homeschool Astronomy. While this is considered a science elective, Moe Man really wants to learn Astronomy, so we are learning Astronomy. I would much rather let him have his way (when he wants to learn something) than have to fight with him every day when it comes to school. Plus, he got a telescope from his biological mom, so we need an excuse to use it, right!?!?!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Social Studies

This year we are going to learn about the American Government while using A Journey in Liberty. I personally feel that a study of the U.S. Constitution is very much needed right now and this program looks like a great one!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

Electives

For the electives this year, I decided to pick home economics. I picked this and Moe Man has no choice! I decided this on the day I asked him to make his own mac and cheese and he didn’t know what to do. That is when I realized that I was babying my boys too much and I don’t want to be that mom who has that boy!

For Home Ec, I have decided to make my own curriculum, but to follow the ideas that Angie from Real Life at Home gives in her eBook, Training Your Children in Home Economics. I love this book and I know that I will be able to make a curriculum for Moe Man and even adapt it to make a curriculum for Ray Ray also!

9th Grade Curriculum Choices

So there it is, the list of classes that I will be having Moe Man work on for his Freshman year. I am sure that we will add some things later as we get used to the schedule. And yes, we have the bible, but it is just him reading from Jesus Calling and from his bible at this time.

What are you using for your lessons this year? Do you have a Freshman? What classes will they be taking?

SmartKidz Media ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

SmartKidz Media Crew Review

When homeschooling multiple children, you find that having an endless supply of educational videos on hand is a priceless tool! SmartKidz Media has just that tool in their SmartKidz Media Library for Homeschoolers.

 photo SmartKidz Media Crew Review_zpsxng3gde5.jpg

What is SmartKidz Media?

SmartKidz Media is the best resource I have seen in some time! This is an online streaming program. A collection of over 1,000 videos, eBooks, music and study guides. After purchasing your choice of memberships, monthly for $10/month or 1 year at $99 for the year, you will have access to all of the digital content that SmartKidz Media has to offer!

This is a great resource, but is not a full curriculum. SmartKidz Media covers almost all subjects with their many different resources and can be used with all different ages.

 photo SmartKidz Review_zpstk0y4teb.jpg

How Did We Use SmartKidz Media?

SmartKidz Media became a part of our everyday life, in and out of homeschooling. We used this site to help enforce what we were learning, but we also used this when the kids were “bored”. Rainy days can make for grumpy kids, but when you let them have free range of a website full of videos, they start to have more fun!

Little Miss loves videos, and animals. She was the first to use this resource, and I have a feeling she will not stop using it anytime soon. She is always watching the videos when I have the big boys working on their school.

We also found the videos that mommy wanted the kids to watch based on what we were learning. There are so many different subjects, while Little Miss loved the animal ones, I was able to have Moe Man watching some of the history ones, or using the Quick Find Study Guides for different things like math or language arts.

What Did We Think?

SmartKidz Media is a hit in this house. I love the chance to let the kids watch educational TV shows. The kids loved being able to watch what they wanted on my computer. It was a win on both sides. Little Miss was all about the baby animals and has begun to tell me about her learnings now. I am always be called over to tell her the quick facts about each animal before they start that section and she is super curious about the favorite foods of each animal, although she is not happy about some of their choices!

 photo SmartKidz Mediea Review_zpsjw8xk5tv.jpg

Ray Ray is in love with watching about the strongest animals and about the different countries. He has made a list of where he wants to travel to, here’s to hoping he can find a great way to do that! Moe Man, well, he is a teenager, so he won’t tell me how much he enjoys the history videos. He won’t say that he asks to watch them over and over again, and he won’t say that he has been caught taking notes on them. But, I will say that as his mom, I think he likes it!

Even mommy likes these videos. I find myself watching them after the kids have run outside to play. I have to say that the animal soap operas are quite refreshing and funny to watch. Little Miss didn’t catch all the insider jokes, but mommy couldn’t stop laughing, so she laughed too! Our whole family was in love with the variety of shows offered on SmartKidz Media and I think your family will love them just as much!

FishFlix Christian Movies ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

Do you like to watch videos as part of your homeschool? I remember LOVING the videos during school! FishFlix.com has come out with some wonderful videos that you can use as a part of your homeschool lessons!
FishFlix.com Review

For our review we were given the chance to watch Metamorphosis and Flight. These two movies went together very well as we learned about butterflies and birds in flight.
FishFlix.com Review

Metamorphosis is a beautiful movie about the design and beauty of butterflies. The film was wonderfully made and the pictures were beautiful. I loved watching the beauty of these wondrous creatures in flight. The film was filmed in the rain forests of Ecuador and Mexico's Trans-Volcanic mountain range.

During this movie, you are taken through the life of a butterfly. We were able to watch this to go along with our life cycle study of the butterfly. Learning about the wonderful transformation of a butterfly is fun, but to add in a beautifully though out movie is a fun experience. This movie had us following the monarch butterfly with their migration, and now the kids are excited to see the butterflies arrive here this summer…hmm, time for a butterfly garden and numerous re-watchings of this video I think!
FishFlix.com Review

Flight was another wonderful movie, but this time it was about the flight of birds. This was the film that I thought my boys would love, but the child who couldn't stop watching it was Little Miss. We watched this film on a road trip and found that it was great way to learn while we had to drive!

FishFlix Homeschool Review

Watching a bird as it grows within the egg and learning about the hummingbird and starlings has a way of capturing anyone's attention, but watching this video was another fun way to learn about birds for our science lessons. We were able to take this video and add on to it with writing for Moe Man, and drawings for Ray Ray. Seeing them pay attention and knowing they were enjoying what they were watching was really fun!

Out of the two videos, we all seemed to enjoy Flight a little more! Watching it while driving might have been the key, but watching birds fly has always amazed me. I love the hummingbird, and I loved learning about the robot model that they are making to try and copy the hummingbird. The other fun thing about the Flight video was the starlings. I had always wondered about how they grouped together and how they were able to fly like they do. This video let me understand how they don't crash, yet fly in such huge groups.

We loved the videos and loved being able to learn in a new way. All the kids love using visuals for learning, and these Christian based videos really helped us in a subject mom has never really liked. They are not a full curriculum in a movie, but they are enough to help you build a unit study out of them and be able to use them as part of a full curriculum.

I would have to say, my favorite part of these movies, was finding out the company, FishFlix, is literally just down the road in the next town over from me!!

FishFlix carries many more movies and I am making my way over to read the other reviews on these other ones. Will you join me? Come back when you are done and let me know which movie(s) you are most interested in watching!!

The Critical Thinking Co. ~ A Schoolhouse Crew Review

The Critical Thinking Company

Patterns Patterns everywhere! But did you know that patterns help you with your reasoning skills and those skills are needed to help you with your math and science. The Critical Thinking Co. has the perfect book to help you with your patterns. We were able to review Pattern Explorer with Moe Man recently.

The Critical Thinking Company

I don’t know who was more excited when we received the Pattern Explorer book in the mail. I love patterns and anything that has to do with them. Moe Man, well he has issues with patterns. I figured this would be the best way to get him to have fun with them.

In this 90 page workbook, we have 5 different themes for the patterns. These themes are the Pattern Predictor, Equality Explorer, Sequence Sleuth, Number Ninja and Function Finder. Moe Man and I each had our favorites when it came to these themes. While I loved the Number Ninja and the Sequence Sleuth, Moe Man loved the Pattern Predictor the best.

The Critical Thinking Company

There are 40 different worksheets in this workbook, and following the worksheets is a Hints section. This has come in helpful for us. Both Moe Man and I were able to open up to this when we were stuck and use it to help us along with our page we were working on. There are hints for every worksheet, but not every problem.

After the hints section there is the answers. This is the section I had to hide from Moe Man. He would get frustrated at times and want to check, but I wanted us to figure these out without checking until we were done.

I keep talking about Moe Man and I doing this together. Since he has some issues with math and patterns, I thought this would be a great way to work on that. However, he didn’t quite understand the patterns as well as I thought he would, so we worked on these together. Each day, we have found time to work on at least one worksheet together. This was a great experience for him and I know that he learned a lot during this time.

While working on these worksheets together, I seen Moe Man start to figure out how to work on them more and more on his own. There is no right or wrong way to work on the worksheets. They do slowly get harder as you go along in the book, but you can start anywhere and skip around as much as you want without a problem. Since Moe Man has an issue with the patterns, we worked from beginning to end, no skipping.

Our final opinion on this workbook? Well, I loved it and loved working on it with Moe Man. As much as Moe Man fought me every time we sat down to do these problems, I noticed the fight getting to be less and the questions on how to do the problems getting to be more. While he may not say it, I have to say that it was nice to see that he was enjoying thinking in a new way about patterns.

The Patterns Explorer workbook is for grades 5-7, but I was enjoying it, and I don’t think I am a 7th grader anymore! This is a fun book to do and a great way to use your brain in a different way.
